737 MAX And A320 NEO Interior?

Fri Jul 13, 2012 10:35 am

Will the 737Max and A320 Neo get a new interior?

I suppose the 737Max will get the new Sky Interior (that we find on the new 737NGs). But what about the A320Neo?

I'm sure the A320NEO will get a new interior.

Unfortunately no announcement for a new interior has been made for the NEO, and Airbus has repeatedly said that they want to avoid mission creep and stick strictly to the new engines, period. So everything points to no new interior for the NEO, at least at EIS. However, since it will be produced until at least the mid-2020's, I can't imagine there won't be a new interior launched sometime after EIS.

C&D Zodiac wants Airbus to include the SmartBin pivot bin package on the A320neo as standard. It remains to be seen if Airbus will adopt it.

I don't really think a new interior counts as mission creep. It's not that big a deal. I mean they could introduce it for the A320 and therefore not a part of the NEO program. I'm sure that the designers and engineers for the interior are not working on other parts of the aircraft.

Also given that the Boeing sky interior is better than the Airbus standard, which is not bad though, I'm sure they'll want to match it.

How disappoiting! I thought they would do something better as the current A320 interior is far behind the Boeing Sky Interior.

Depends on how much you modify. If you just change the linings, no big deal. If you incorporate new IFE, new CIDS, new galleys, etc, it can get more complex. The cabin engineers should be busy enough preparing the A350 cabin right now, and every new A380 head of version also keeps them pretty occupied. I assume Airbus would not want to divert resources from those right now.

As I said above, given how long the A320 will be in service I still expect them to launch a new cabin, not at EIS, but following the current incremental step strategy: sharklets in 2012, new engine in 2015-16, then perhaps new cabin in 2017-18...

I hope that they come up with something newer than the present interior they have. Don't get me wrong, I find they present one comfortable but it is starting to get a little bet dated compared with the Boeing SkyInterior.

The A320 got a new interior just recently. I'm not sure why Airbus would do two new interiors in less than a decade.

Maybe because it is way behind the Boeing Sky Interior...

Yeah, but it still isn't as nice as the B-737's Sky Interior.

Mood lighting is there... gradual lighting change is there. LED lighting is there, selectable announcements, etc etc etc.
All it lacks is pivot bins and sculpted ceilings... but then, I hear they're available as options on the Zodiac cabin for the 320.

Probably. It'll probably be named "The Matrix."

On a more serious note, are doing such things as overhauling the interior cabin difficult? Like, for the transition from the past 737 interior to the Sky Interior.. are there any engineering difficulties?

Really? Having been on a few U2 A319 in the past month, I have to say the current A320 cabin is pretty nice. Steps ahead of the previous-gen 737 cabin, for sure. I haven't flown on a 737 with the Sky Interior, but it looks claustrophobic. The lack of a PSU directly overhead is unsetlling..

But it is not standard on each new A320 AFAIK.
Only Virgin America has mood lightings on their A320s, right?

Air Asia has it on some if I didn't look at the CIDS wrongly...

If customer preference starts swinging to the MAX over the NEO because of a perceived better and more comfortable 'feeling' aboard, airlines preference will at some point have to follow. Airbus knows this, I'm sure they're planning with Sogerma etc
