Too bad for anybody in FCO who wanted to see it. I know the IAD flight connects through there, but it's still cool to see the inaugural.

True, the IAD flight leaves ADD 15 min before the YYZ one, so there will be a 2x 77L convoy from ADD-FCO and a good part of the TATL leg as well. would be nice to capture that on camera at FCO.

Do they have traffic rights on the FCO YYZ leg? I wouldn't mind hopping on that sometime!
I wish there was still a flying boat service on the African Lakes!

Unfortunately no
AFAIK, they have not applied for one. It is purely a fueling stop due to ADD altitude, a stop or heavy penalty on weight is required on the westbound leg.

Anyone know why they chose FCO over MAD, BCN, or LIS?

I think that's been answered. IIRC, ET already served FCO so they already had a station there. And Ethiopia having been an Italian colony generates traffic between the two countries that wouldn't exist between any other city pair.

Because they have operations there (daily flight so ground staff) is the general consensus rationale on A.net.

See details of FCO S12 schedule at: http://airlineroute.net/2012/02/06/et-arnadd-jun12/

The Ethiopian Airlines inaugural flight to YYZ (ETH 502) is on the way from FCO now, expected to land around 07.30 local time. This is, IMHO one of the least publicized inaugural flights I have seen.

ET502 landed about an hour or so late in YYZ on Rwy 23. I saw the plane on final from my office parking lot. ET crew wears a very interesting green uniform (google for pics).

Finally out of YYZ - slow of the blocks (why, not sure, any info anyone has?) but she is on her way back to ADD:

Not in the short term, has not been of any plans recently. But who knows, sometimes things happen fast at ET with little to no public announcements.

Did anyone get pictures in YYZ? I will assume that ET being a Star Alliance member will use T1?

According to the Toronto Pearson airport website, it was indeed T1: http://www.torontopearson.com/en/flights/departureschedules/#

Skytrax is a very subjective airline quality ranking system. There are so many combinations and permutations taken into account that it isn't really what I would consider a "reliable" source of information. I personally visit the TR forums right here on ANET to get more accurate data points on what type of service to expect.

Ethiopian does appear to have a very solid product based on the reviews I have read.

It was about an hour late into YYZ and with the "first day kinks" I expected a delay. Perhaps they had issues at check-in, baggage handling, catering, etc.

what a scam.

In two of the pictures, a banner is there, and it cleary states "first non stop between Africa and Canada". This is clearly false, as YUL has had non stop to CMN and ALG for years now.

Don't leave what the first part of the message says "Toronto Pearson and Ethiopian Airlines brings you the first non-stop between Africa and Canada"... It was in relation to "Toronto" not the rest of Canada. Ethiopian is the first airline to do that.

I truly wish them all the best, especially the large Ethiopian community of Toronto.

First part of the message does absolutely nothing to correct what is an innacurate statement. They could have said "Tim Hortons and Dunkin Donuts bring you....." and it would still convey the wrong message. They should have stated " between Africa and Toronto".

A joke that could be very costly. People have sued for less. YYZ is lucky this isn't the States.

Edit: Incidently, those two pictures in question have been removed from YYZ's facebook page, at my request. It wouldn''t surprise me if the banner is no longer there as well.

Fifth freedom rights aren't very useful when you only operate in one direction. 90% of people are flying round trip. The schedule would also be very unattractive with flights leaving FCO in the middle of the night.

MS also operated YUL-CAI (seasonal service if memory correct) for a while until they dropped the route a couple of years ago.

The ET press release appears to be correct correct as it only says it's the first direct service between Toronto (not Canada) and Africa.
