Ethiopian First 787 Being Painted In Ft Worth

Fri Jul 13, 2012 9:51 pm

Presumably the first 787 to go to ET was flown from PAE to FTW for a paint job.

Am I crazy or did they not have one already painted in Ethiopian Colours, I seem to recall a picture for another site that showed a 787 in Ethiopian Colours or maybe I was seeing another airline.

There are photos with the rudder already painted. Most planes have painted control surfaces when they leave the factory.

How many planes do they plan to do in Ft Worth? I don't recall hearing about this before, but I could just be out of the loop or have a fading memory.

May be because there is no 787 painted in full ET livery just the rudder.

The rudder has to be painted during assembly as it is a balanced control surface.

This 787 has a lower ln/cn, but now appears to not be the first for Ethiopian:

I caught ln49 taking off on Thursday and the photo is in the queue. Strangely, the rudder was not painted with the Ethiopian paint scheme (it was white).

Some additional data from ET's website:

  • Plane will stay in TX (They say San Antonio, what we have read thus far says Ft Worth) for 12 days
  • It will then fly back to SEA for delivery to ET
  • Delivery in early Aug
http://www.ethiopianairlines.com/en/news/pressreleases.aspx?hl=%20320

What facility is that in Ft Worth/San Antonio that would be used for the paint job? Boeing facility? Is the paint shop in PAE that backed up? And as most of you have noted, why weren't the rudders painted in Mfg? Very strange as I seem to recall that LN49 has always been a ET destined plane...

I was fooled like you guys. I think it may have been the 77Ls but I did a search and could not find any fully painted ET 787, so unless I did not search well enough, LN49 will be the first plane is fully color scheme.

BTW, do we know at which LN the heavy rework is no longer required? Must be in the mid 40s...

Boeing has two separate operations in Texas. They are painting planes in Fort Worth. Here in San Antonio, they are doing required upgrades to the early 787 frames. There apparently is not enough space nor people in Seattle. so Boeing is using their facility here at Kelly USA, the former Kelly AFB.

Boeing has contracted painting for the Charleston-built 787s - link. Looks like they'll be sending some Everett-built airframes there too.

Quoting ETinCaribe (Reply 11):

Yes, and their PDX facilities where 777s often get painted. Note that 777 production has increased, they have to get through a backlog of 747s and 787s, 1-2 767s a month and new 787s are coming off the line and going to paint rather than being stored at PAE.

Will ET take two 787 at once. nyc787,blogspot.com shows ET-AOQ and ET-AOR in final prep for delivery. And ET has the 787 doing ADD-CAN-ADD daily which requires 2 frames from AUG 16. Anybody have more info on this?

Ethiopian will operate the 787 on a delivery/revenue flight on Aug 16 from IAD-ADD. It will be ET 2501 leaving IAD at 12:30pm and Arriving ADD at 9:00 AM on the 17th.

ET will take delivery of the 787 on Aug 14.

"Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest growing airline in Africa, is pleased to announce that it will take delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner on August 14, 2012, in Seattle, Washington.

Ethiopian is proud to be the first airline from Africa, Europe, Americas and Middle East to take delivery of the Dreamliner, and to be able to offer its passengers the ultimate travel experience on-board this game changing aircraft before other carriers. “The fact that we are the first airline outside Japan to receive this ultra modern aircraft is an affirmation of our continuing pioneering role in African aviation. It is also a testimony of our commitment to give our passengers the best possible travel experience, with the best industry products and services.,” said Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian.

After taking delivery, Ethiopian will fly its Dreamliner to Washington D.C. the next day, where the aircraft will be on display. During the exhibition, Ethiopian Dreamliner is expected to be visited by US Senators and House Representatives as well as Ambassadors, Executives from the World Bank and IMF, members of the Ethiopian community, the media and other invited guests.

Ethiopian Dreamliner, the first to be received by a non-Japanese carrier, will make its historic trip to Africa and will touchdown at Bole Addis Ababa International Airport on August 16, 2012. The airline will hold celebrations in Addis Ababa for the arrival of the aircraft and will soon announce its first Dream destinations."

It won't most likely. If time permitted, it would have been cool to go SEA-LHR (or even with a stop in IAD) to get there at the end of the Olympics and take the Ethiopian team home in the brand new plane - would have been cool but won't happen.

Another thing I wish ET did was to paint 787 in Ethiopian characters (see: http://www.ethiopianreview.com/ethiopia/amharic-alphabets.html) similar to ANA but with a local flavor (see: http://www.airliners.net/photo/All-N...Boeing-787-881-Dreamliner/2048118) One can dream...

On a slightly off topic note, looks like ET502 ADD-YYZ made its stopover in CDG instead of FCO yesterday.

I'm so bummed I won't be in Addis to witness this historic event. Also, I thought it would be the second non-Japanese Dreamliner since Air India is expecting to receive theirs before.

That was also my dream but unfortunately Ethiopian isn't much of a fan of such fan-fair although I doubt pioneering airlines will have somewhat of a display of that sort. It is only special for ANA since it was the first to receive. They should of at least put something on there to represent it being the first African Dreamliner instead!

Interesting! Do they have traffic rights on that route? Or is it just a fuel stop like FCO? It would however make sense to make CDG the stop considering the demographics of the Canadian population

ET-AOQ to be named "Africa Frist"

http://ethiopianairlines.com/en/news/pressreleases.aspx?hl=%20326

"Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian, said, “Ethiopian Airlines is a truly indigenous African airline, which has been pioneering the African aviation for the last 67 years and it is only natural for us to deploy our first B787 in Africa. In affirmation of its commitment as Africa’s flagship carrier, we are naming our 1 st B787 Dreamliner as "Africa First"."

Hmmm, sounds a bit cheesy if you ask me. Why not just AFRICA! Reminds me of the "Ethiopia Tikdem" (Ethiopia First) slogan during the Communist era. She will be beautiful regardless.

Looks like there is a PR per day out of ADD these days.
The latest: 787 routes once again have been re-shuffled. The latest (final???) list:

Quote:
The 1st Ethiopian Dreamliner will touch down in Addis Ababa at Bole International Airport on 17 August 2012. The first flight of Ethiopian Dreamliner dubbed “The Dream Tour,” will be on August 18, 2012, with a sightseeing flight to Mount Kilimanjaro for around 270 invited guests, consisting of Ministers, Ambassadors, other VIPs, Ethiopian ShebaMiles Gold Members and media.

Thereafter, starting from 19 August 2012, the 1 st Ethiopian Dreamliner will be operating on rotation basis to African destinations such as Kilimanjaro, Mombassa, Harare, Lusaka, Nairobi, Entebbe, Lagos, Johannesburg, Abuja, Malabo, Douala, Lomé, Accra, Maputo, Luanda as well as to Dubai, Mumbai, Rome, London and Frankfurt.

Good move to have the plane flying to African destinations first, jibes with the Africa First name...

Ok folks, this is the big day for ET. Only the 3rd operator to take ownership of a Dreamliner is a nice milestone that I am sure we will hear about many times over.

Anyone amongst our PAE spotters that will be at there today to take some pix/video for the rest of us?
Also, anyone will be in ET2501 IAD-ADD? Hope to get some detailed trip report out of that as well. I would have gone if it were not for such an annoyance as a job did not get in the way

Airlineroutes.net has the list of one-off 787 destinations for the coming few weeks:

Addis Ababa – Abuja 27AUG12
Addis Ababa – Accra 01SEP12
Addis Ababa – Brazzaville – Kinshasa – Addis Ababa ET831 on 28AUG12
Addis Ababa – Dubai ET600/601 on 18AUG12 – 23AUG12, 26AUG12 – 27AUG12, 01SEP12 – 03SEP12 (DXB departure 19AUG12 – 24AUG12, 27AUG12 – 28AUG12, 02SEP12 – 04SEP12)
Addis Ababa – Harare – Lusaka – Addis Ababa ET873 on 20AUG12, 23AUG12
Addis Ababa – Jeddah ET402/403 on 31AUG12
Addis Ababa – Johannesburg 26AUG12 (Planned Daily 787 service starting 26AUG12 is postponed until 28OCT12 at the earliest)
Addis Ababa – Kilimanjaro – Mombasa ET815/814 on 21AUG12, 24AUG12

ET-AOQ has now been handed over to ET. She left PAE a few minutes ago on her way to IAD.
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/ETAOQ

Additional PR from ET directly: http://www.ethiopianairlines.com/en/news/pressreleases.aspx?hl=%20327

No new photos or videos yet though that I have been able to see

In related news, ET's CEO tells the Wall Street Journal that the airline is considering both the 737MAX and A320NEO for its single-aisle needs. MAX should have the inside track on this one for sure.
