MIA New Intl Arrivals Facility Opening 7/31/12

Sun Jul 15, 2012 3:43 pm

Looks like the long awaited new International Arrivals Facility for the North Terminal should be opening soon.

Should be a big improvement over having to walk to the facility in terminal E. Any Idea if this is a firm date or not?

That is truly great news - I was wondering when it would be opening.

Now, they just need to get the Amtrak station completed!

Are the awful Terminal E facilities going to be retired?

I'm pretty sure that MIA will be a very good airport going forward.

However, I am almost afraid to look at the next FAA release to look and see what MIA's CPE will be........

At any rate, the best to all involved there.

I am guessing that the E FIS is remaining open since it serves many flights at Concourse E and F including Virgin Atlantic. IF you were AA and BA would you want your new FIS to have Virgin in it ? NO WAY.

Right now BA uses the close in gates at E concourse, I am guessing they are moving to D finally.

I have been a long suffering AA MIA flyer and all I can say is thank goodness....no longer (I hope) will I have to calculate in 4 hours to clear FIS in MIA for connections....

The days of hanging to left in the arrivals hall in the hope if a shorter immigration line are hopefully over.

Hope it is like ATL or DFW where my last two trips I ave waited about 5 minutes to be processed.

"On average, it takes an hour or more to get through immigration and customs. So, the airport is opening a new facility to speed things up. "We are thinking, on an average, it will be 15 to 20 minutes less than it was before," Chin said."

I have never had MIA FIS take an hour except very late at night,,,it is usually more like 2-3 hours...so it better be more than just saving 15-20 minutes.....cause then I am really moving to flights via ATL, CLT and DFW.

Having a split system like ATL would have been nice for us connecting pax. THose just going to MIA can afford to wait a little longer.

It took me 1 hour 47 minutes to clear immigration the other day. Hopefully that improves with this, it's one of the worst traits of MIA.

Since I got my new Global Entry last year immigration has been a breeze.
It is definitely worth the trouble to get it and the TSA Pre feature is also amazing but availability is still limited and it only apples to wholly domestic itineraries.

But there is no excuse for 1 hr and 47 mins in immigration anywhere...
We pay taxes for these services and it should be properly staffed.

I actually took a tour of MIA concourse E FIS yesterday. They stated concourse E will go under renovations. I believe there will be 80 passport control stations in the new one. They are all excited to finally get it open. It's not just the passengers who don't enjoy concourse E FIS, the CBP officers don't enjoy it either.

IAH in the afternoon is getting bad too. Agree on the proper staffing.

I'm flying BOG-MIA tomorrow so it looks like I'll miss the new facility by about a week. Oh well, it'll be good to get one last look at the Concourse E facility. I've had great experiences there (got through in less than five minutes one time) and horrible ones too (upwards of 90 minutes). Things got worse in 2005 when the old Concourse B FIS closed, but they did get better when the South Terminal FIS opened a few years ago and a lot of carriers left Concourses E and F for the new facility.

As others have said, a beautiful new immigration facility with twice the number of stations is ONLY effective if it's staffed properly. I can't count how many US airports I've been to with sparkling new immigration facilities and only three or four booths staffed by CBP officers. I've seen it at DFW, PHL, JFK, SFO... massive new immigration halls that always seem to be choked with slow-moving lines due to understaffing. The same goes for security checkpoints... airports have been bending over backwards over the past decade to expand them and it seems like half the stations are closed off.

The problem is CBP has stated that they will not be staffing all the stations. They do not have the head count.

Well they will close concourse E, so I would hope they will have some other officers come in or ready to work in the checks. Maybe they won't have all 80 up right away but at least 60 or so. Concourse E only has 37 stations I think. So if all 80 are working that should be a nice cut down in time. I know someone who recently got hired for CBP in Florida, he said it looks like he is going to get stationed at MIA. So I think they are hiring but hiring and the academy will take months.

no way on earth are you going to see all 80 staffed...that is if there is a crisis maybe...computers down for an extended amount of time...if they have a huge amount of irregular ops...it will just allow them to catch up...remember they do other things as well besides passport control...secondary checks...cargo...customs...ships...they do have a huge operation down there...and a lot of bad people to deal with that we don't see...they have to fight for more staffing like all the ports...

but sure...staffing could be a bit better managed...but these guys are unioned... CLT surpassed MSP in international passengers...CLT has about 38 total CBP officers...MSP has 80....double the officers...less passengers? Logic?

Sadly this is a National issue that will not go away. How many U.S airports coordinate monthly with CPB and the TSA to set maxmium numbers of arriving and departing passengers using real time numbers instead of theoretical numbers created by a computer after the Terminal is operational.

Interesting to note the "processing" pax/hr is listed at 2000+, for the new MIA terminal (a red flag right there) with 72 booths available.

On a side note, does anyone know if MIA is a Landing Rights airport?
