Future Of Two Ex-PAA 747s, Incl. PGE Testbed?

Mon Jul 16, 2012 1:49 am

I heard that GE is considering replacing its old 747 with a former JAL 744. Are these plans firm? If so, is there any chance that this, the second oldest 747 still flying, will be preserved somewhere and not end up as a scrapheap like that poor Honeywell 720-051B?

Her sistership, former N743 Clipper Derby and Clipper Black Sea was still flying in 2011 with Logistic Air Cargo, S2-AFA. Is she still flying?

We currently show S2-AFA as stored at KHI, some other sources are saying JHB. Does anyone know for sure where it currently is?

There was an article in an AvWk blog in Feb 2011 about the new 747 test bed with the ex-JAL bird and the GE flight test bird in the same photo. Scheduled to take over test flying duties in 2013.

It is a long url, so Google "GE's new 747 flying testbed"

One advantage to the new 747 is that it will have GE engines.

I have no definitive info here, but this plane was/is only rarely used and was already temporarily stored in several places.
A search reveals the latest photo on the web is from January 2012 and shows all three Logistic Air 747s parked in Johor Bahru/Malaysia. All planes look as if they are only there for a short time awaiting charters.

Yeah it's true, I was able to visit their facility at VCV back in February and I was able to go onto both 747's before the 744 left for HKG I believe. The 741 still had the PA carpet and some of the first class seats, it was really awesome to be on that plane. They did tell us that the 741 is going to fly for 2 more years and then will be retired. There are no plans for it yet but it could wind up being donated to a museum. It cannot be sold to anyone for any kind of flying operations though.

The 744 is registered N747GF and we were told that when the 741 is retired the 744 will take on N747GE.
