It's about time!

DL did everything they could to chase Frontier out of MSP-MCI, but now they have another competitor on the route that they won't be able to defeat!

PVD/ISP-RSW are interesting. I think of the west coast of Florida as more of a destination for those of us in flyover country than for the east coast (sort of the anti-PBI). But WN knows how many copnnecting passengers they are getting to RSW from those cities.

About time. People have been asking for this for years. Hopefully one plane thru service to DAL.

Finally! Now just waiting on MSP-OMA. My biggest client (fortune 100 company) was flying weekly MSP-OMA, she said it's always $800-$1000 and about a month ago, her boss said she now has to drive it after flying it for many years because the price is just too much. It's a 6 hour drive @ 75mph and she hates it! It wastes 2 days every week driving and she can't get her work done now. She has been waiting for southwest to fly this for the past year! For her sake and many others that I know, I really hope that 2x daily OMA-MSP starts in the next year or so!!

No Thru-Flight, but WN 384 (MSP-MCI) gives the option to connect to WN 19 (MCI-DAL) in MCI.

As sdoyon mentioned, the flights are not thru flights to DAL; however as currently exists today one-stop thru flights are offered thru STL

WN ran PVD-RSW this past winter. There is a large second home component from the PVD area to the RSW area and then you add in the Red Sox nation demand for Spring training games and you have hyper-demand for a few months. NK ran PVD-RSW 2X daily (1X 321 and 1X 319 a few years ago).

I agree 100%.

I think MSP-OMA is an untapped market, because there isn't an easy way to drive there. You either have to take I-35 to I-80 via DSM, which is somewhat circtuitous, or take US-71 to US-169, which is mostly two lane undivided rural roads.

There's never been a low fare airline in this market, and I think Southwest would really stimulate it by getting people out of their cars.

Appreciate the insight. That's interesting. I did not realize that the Red Sox trained so close to RSW - you can almost walk there from the old terminal.

I'm confused I guess. ALB-LAS was supposed to become seasonal, according to another thread. Now will it stay year round?

They are right in Ft. Myers. Flights on B6 during March out of BOS are always packed with Sox fans heading down. Out of PVD will be no different for WN.

No, still seasonal. This is just announcing the seasonal resumption. All of the routes announced (except for MCI-MSP) will be seasonal.

It's interesting the number of seasonal Florida routes that WN is adding....taking a page out of FL's playbook. So much for those who were expecting a big drawdown of WN in Florida after the merger.

RE: WN 7/16 Schedule Release

This schedule extension, IMO, and at least from a SAN perspective, is a true indicator of the latest trend in WN scheduling. Effective 2/13/13, our flight count increases by a net 3 daily departures (to 89) as compared to the January 2013 offering, following the reinstatement of most of the cuts made on that January schedule. (Understandable.) However, this February schedule contains 4 fewer flights than the previous February (2012) schedule which saw SAN with 93 daily flights!

So SAN is seeing more and more seasonal service (both routes and frequencies) along with an overall decrease in the number of flights. I'm sure this is not the case at all WN stations, but it seems that this is more often the case lately in a number of cities.

Good, bad -- ? Just part of the new Southwest (and new environment in which today's airlines exist.)

I agree 100% as well - it's far enough that it's worth flying and has never had an LCC attempt stimulation of the market.

PVD goes from 17 to 23 departures (January 2013 to February 2013) but is off by 1 departure February year over year.

couldnt one still do OMA-MDW-MSP or OMA-STL-MSP and still be cheaper than a non stop DL flight? Even with the connection I would think it would be still quicker than driving, as pointed out theres no good way to drive there

Lots of long(er) hauls on here. I think as the 733s and 735s slowly phase out this will continue to be the trend, at the cost of 1 hour runs, like we're seeing already.

STL will be at 88 daily flights with this schedule release, and if you add in the proposed twice daily service to DCA, STL will be at 90 daily flights (93 with AirTran service to ATL). STL stays pretty consistent.....

Well like always with every schedule release rumors of what's to be announced fly out of every direction.
I relay and post them EVEN THOUGH I take some back lash from them. I only post to see if others have heard the same rumblings with that said.
Looks like the only big winner for Monday is MSP-MCI.
More announcements again rumored about FL new international flying along with some WN DCA flying to be coming out this Thursday.
I think you will see more International flying from SNA.
enjoy wnfg

On a somewhat related note, I noticed that, starting with the October schedule, WN has concentrated the remaining 735s to basically only flights to/from DAL and HOU. So if you are looking to catch a 735 before they're gone, looks like you're gonna have to head to Texas. Weren't the 735s mostly intra-TX birds at some point in the past?

Too bad, at one point that was the only way to get to the Bay area N/S from KC. Now there will be 3 N/S on UA to SFO.

I would love to see the business plan that says they will integrate only after ALL the airplanes are painted. Do they just stand down the AT fleet while this is done? At some point you would have a majority of the AT planes repainted yet no way to fly the AT route structure if you are going to keep the scheme consistent with the operation.

WN is avoiding mentioning the elephant in the room by not having the two entities operating on a common bookable network. What a waste of money. The problems at WN are not paint related, although the barney blue is pretty ugly, they have planning, network, computer and other issues that are starting to cripple them. A employee cost structure that can not be supported with the current revenue and some serious bumps on the horizon.

Have you read any of the other threads? There are obvious hurdles...res system and such before everything can be integrated. What FL (not AT) route structure would they be unable to fly? Most of the routes now they can do. Now if you are talking about the hub/spoke structure at ATL, that's already a dead man walking.

It has been brought up many times in regards to the res system. So not sure where you get it hasn't. Is money going out the window? I'm sure there is. As far as the employee cost structure, while the most generous in the industry (jealous?) will get help with the new contracts this year through less inefficiencies.

Agreed.   Looks like they are an "airline pilot" by their profile. Maybe he got rejected after trying to get hired by WN and this is why he is so negative? Or maybe because his pay is lower from being gutted in bankruptcy while WN, with the highest pay rates, tends to find a way to keep making money. Sigh. Some people's children.

That couldn't be farther from the truth. I would give up flying before I ever worked for WN. They are not the model I wanted when choosing a career.

WN achieved their success with an excellent hedge program and creating the myth that they are a low fare airline. Now they are morphing toward the legacy model.

By spinning the schedule changes as a great thing, while they continue to misstep the integration. Hopefully the legacy carriers can make hay during this timeframe. If the dismantling of ATL is true then WN has lost the battle with DL. They lost in PHL and perhaps DEN will be in play.

The longer it takes the better for the rest of the industry.

They have a plan for integration...it's just a much slower plan than maybe ideal. And there's some other airlines who aren't doing much better. I might note that UA's merger was initiated well before WN's, yet the UA/CO merger has turned into a disaster. The reservation system is a mess, operational performance has deteriorated, the employee groups still aren't even close to being integrated, customer service is rapidly declining and UA's management doesn't have a clue what they are doing. Given all that, I think WN's slower approach might actually be wiser at this point.

Probably true, but I don't know that DL cares enough to make the effort to do so. They aren't running 753s on STL-MSP, and I think capacity on STL-MSP may actually be down some from 3-4 years ago, when it seems to me it was mostly CR9 with occasional mainline. Now, it's mostly CRJ with just a couple of CR9/E75 flights.

I don't live in a legacy FL city so I don't see the FL side of things, but I fly WN fairly extensively and can say that I haven't seen the merger integration making anything worse on the WN side. If that's also true on the FL side, you may be right. Certainly, WN isn't losing customers as a result of the merger, and I don't know that that's true for UA. (FWIW, US/HP also had some customer-facing growing pains, especially with the switchover to SHARES).

The general rule for a while has been that the closer you are to Texas, the more likely you are to see a 735, though in the past year, I've flown them LAX/PHX/DTW-BNA.

Ok thanks. I don't think that rule has been true at least recently. With the current schedule, BWI and PHX are the only stations with double digit 735 departures while DAL and HOU only have 4-5. Starting in October though, DAL and HOU both will have over 40 735 flights. So I definitely think there's been a significant change in how they are going to utilize the 735s until they're gone.

In the schedule, there clearly is. It'll be interesting to see how they are actually utilized. Are they doing a lot of DAL-HOU-SAT stuff? And are they increasing frequencies on those? SAT-DAL, for instance, is down to "only" 14 daily right now.

MCI-MSP

Very nice! Been a while since MSP saw new WN service outside of the FL deal. MCI is a nice add. And yes, I concur on OMA!

continue to misstep the integration.

Or US/HP's merger that was all roses back in 2005... Oh wait, 7 years later and they still aren't integrated.

I honestly would have expected to see some kind of adjustments at GSP or CHS by now - it's been basically a year and a half now, with no schedule tweaks or additions.

Nothing earth-shattering of course, but maybe an added frequency to HOU or MDW or BWI (?). I know at GSP, we're running nearly record pax numbers.

That's not really surprising....most tertiary markets like CHS/GSP aren't going to see more than about 8 flights a day on WN. You may be running record numbers at GSP, but WN's LF's out of CHS/GSP aren't really high enough to justify adding a lot of capacity and trashing yields.

DL is running 4 mainline today with a mix of Airbuses and MD-90s and 3 CR9/E70/75s on MSP-STL for 7 daily peak flights total, not sure where you're getting the CRJs with just a couple CR9/E75s schedule.

PVD/ISP-RSW are interesting. I think of the west coast of Florida as more of a destination for those of us in flyover country than for the east coast (sort of the anti-PBI).

Appreciate the insight. That's interesting. I did not realize that the Red Sox trained so close to RSW - you can almost walk there from the old terminal.

Yeah, good ole Jetblue Park at Fenway South. When I lived in Cape Coral/ Fort Myers I joked I lived in the southern most suburb of Boston. I could see where PVD-RSW would get a lot of spill over. But to your point about flyover country, I grew up in Indiana. There is, or at least there was when I lived there, an Indiana themed bar in North Fort Myers. Tried it once, didn't go back.

New Orleans will be up to 50 WN departures a day come February since MDW, LAS, and BWI each get the frequency back that was cut in January.

Also, the airline is spending a few million $$$ renovating its gates/public areas on Concourse B at MSY. Work is currently underway.
