INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one

direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5

days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the

future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no

previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

The 6 more this week makes it 49 daily flights cut from IAH so far this month. (for UA)

That's what happens when you go from having 2.5 (IAH, CLE, EWR) hubs to having 7.5 (IAH, CLE, EWR, LAX, DEN, IAD, ORD, SFO). IAH is no longer the most western hub nor most centralized hub for the combined UA/CO.

Well, I give them credit for trying non-hub stuff, but I think with the CRJs going away we will see a lot more of these routes disappear. The LAX stuff is more perplexing with fuel softening.

I believe the LAX flights were going to go back into a seasonal suspension sometime in January. They operate in the summer and then come back for the holiday season in late November and December. It looks like they just cut that season by a week.

I think they are actually now forecasting fuel bumping back up a bit after the brief lull in May and June. Brent today is back up over 103/barrel!

I think we will be seeing more route adjustments, unfortunately. Richard Anderson and team are being true to his pledge not to give back during the winter months profits that accrue during the busy season.

The feeling is mutual in CMH. It's a shame that no one can make these mid-sized routes work. I wonder how much longer IND-RDU has until it too is cut. I was hoping Delta would be the one to achieve success on routes like RDU-IND/CMH/BDL and BDL-IND/CMH.

Well, lets keep in mind these cuts are for September. Another possibility for what has happened is that UA planned these cuts before or during the HOU CBP situation, but didn't want to hurt their chances with the decision so they waited until it was made and then conveniently announced them.

They did shorten the season further versus what they were planning so it's more off-season capacity cuts for DL. They are doing a lot of that these days.

Well, to be fair, these are year over year changes, so coupled with WN's seasonalized schedule announcements it is difficult to classify when those cuts became permanent. So, they may or may not be "new". WN has become like FL in one key way. It is now almost impossible to tell what is a seasonal change and what is a permanent change until a year has passed.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that US beat WN in PHL. I wonder if US will pounce on NK's PHL-DFW. It's interesting that they announced it less than daily to make it even harder for US to commit to responding.

EXACTLY!

Everyone is going nuts over this minute adjustments to these routes that go into a seasonal suspension.

All of these "less-than-daily" LAX flights end for the season after Thanksgiving. They briefly return for about 2 weeks over the Christmas holiday period, then do not come back until either mid-Feb or March.

January and early-February is THE SLOWEST travel period of the year.

All DL did here was make an adjustment to their Holiday schedule, which essentially zero'd out these flights for the month of January, when in fact previously they may have only operated once or twice right after New Years.

This WN reduction has been planned for a while; but it would be fun to know if the recent opening of a casino in Cleveland has had any effect on the CLE-LAS business.

I can tell you this-despite the casino, this flight goes out full every day of the week with few exceptions. With now 11 daily departures starting in January, including one MDW flight departing at 9:15pm connecting to nothing, CLE more and more seems to be the forgotten WN station.

This is surprising, no? Isn't LAS one of the top 10 cities for CLE in terms of O&D?

Not surprising at all considering all the cutting SWA has done at CLE, and LAS was never a year-round route for them anyway.

You saying EWR is half a hub? LAX is tiny and much smaller, but you assign that as a 'whole' hub.

but it would be fun to know if the recent opening of a casino in Cleveland has had any effect on the CLE-LAS business.

WN announces their schedules too far in advance for something that recent to be a factor. They announced the CLE-LAS was going away a couple of months ago.

Quoting swacle (Reply 26):
I can tell you this-despite the casino, this flight goes out full every day of the week with few exceptions.

Vegas is nearly always full. The problem is usually yield. As I said, I would expect the flight to move to CAK. CAK-LAS was flown by FL before.

Quoting swacle (Reply 26):
CLE more and more seems to be the forgotten WN station.

I think WN is really waiting to see what happens with UA's hub. CAK is toast if UA closes the CLE hub. For now, I see CLE-MDW/BWI/ATL as ultimately the schedule and CAK with mostly leisure service. It will be interesting to see if WN adds CLE-ATL which I think is inevitable and what it means to CAK-ATL.

Maybe not so....remember they are pulling the 717s out of the route network and replacing with 73s so to fill in that capacity and allow for some of that new international stuff eqp has to come from somewhere....maybe PHX is part of that..probably the thinking is lets send some of those 73s to ATL

Correct. Anything less than 500 dailies and a minimum of 5 overseas destinations does not constitute a "proper" hub, regardless of what the airline itself considers it to be.

Thanks as always for compiling all this information, including the year-over-year Souhwest/Airtran stuff.

One thing i think people misunderstand about the Southwest year-over-year numbers is that based on its form, the same change often shows up again and again.

Let's say United drops CLE-LAS permanently in May. That drop shows up once time in these weekly updates as soon as it is pulled from the schedule.

Let's say Southwest drops CLE-LAS permanently in May. This same drop shows up repeatedly, every time when Southwest's year-over-year stats are created and posted for the next year. By the fourth or fifth time people see this same single cut, some seem convinced that Southwest is shutting down in Cleveland. They continually see Southwest cuts at CLE time after time when in fact it's the same single flight.

Quoting enilria (Reply 7):
WN MKE-MSP NOV 3>5 DEC 3>5

This is a little bit of a surprise. I was afraid WN would drop this route, but I'm glad they are still committed to it!

I hadn't noted that increase either. DL must love it. DL must also love the new MCI flights. :p ...and NK's bunch of new flights against DL.

It goes back to 3x/day after the first of the year, and it will post very ugly numbers at the higher level.

The market has been 3-4 flights per day since AirTran started it a couple of years back, and this summer it’s running 4x/day. It generally carries about 80% connecting traffic, with only 15-20 locals on the typical flight. AirTran dovetails the flights to feed their MKE connecting banks.

However things change this fall:

--Instead of pulling back to the normal offseason 3x/day, AirTran is increasing to 5x/day in September

--At the same time AirTran incresaed MKE-MSP flights to an all-time high of 5, the number of MKE flights for connecting opportunities is shrinking because Southwest is taking more more and more MKE flights

--Then in November, Southwest takes over the MKE-MSP flights, keeping the 5x/day and upgrading from 717 to 737.

--Because the Southwest schedule is much less banked, the MKE-MSP flights have even fewer connection opportunities and will likely carry a lot of empty seats.

Three of the five flights MKE-MSP are morning flights…6:00am, 7:55am, and 10:50am. The 6:00am flight is too early for connecting feed. The 7:55am flight is a thru from Baltimore and is too early for any other connecting feed at MKE. The 10:50am flight has just a couple of inbounds which can feed it. All three of those flights will need to rely heavily on local traffic, and with AirTran typically carrying just 50-60 one way local passengers all day long, I’m a tad skeptical.

Starting with January, Southwest goes back to the AirTran-traditional 3x/day. But again, with the MKE operation smaller and not banked, it’s not exactly clear where the connecting passengers will come from to fill the seats. But even with the reduced schedule, the MSP flights have far fewer connecting options than AirTran’s flights do today. With the current July schedule, AirTran’s MKE-MSP and MSP-MKE flights have an average of 7.2 flights to connect with at the Milwaukee hub. With the Southwest March schedule, there are an average of 2.8 flights to connect with. And some of those connecting flights are in markets where better Southwest options exist (such as a MSP-MKE-DEN flight which a MSP-DEN overlaps with).

With Southwest pulling out of short-haul markets without much local traffic, I’m not sure that MKE-MSP has long term viability. But we shall see.

On a related note, the combined WN+FL early March weekday count for Milwaukee appears to be 47 compared to 60 last year.

Right but we have the suspects jumping all over these suspensions calling them out-right cuts and they don't know what they're talking about when you and I know full well DL cuts these routes every single year. Further, I didn't get the * when they are seasonal suspensions but I guess you thought them being cut a couple weeks earlier was a surprise.

Not that one, but they added a bunch of MSP routes plus some of their recent DFW hurts SY as well. They had a bunch like that, so I just put my comment at the top.

Agreed. The problem is that WN doesn't really do "schedule changes". This report is about schedule changes. Southwest only extends its schedule. So, there are no "changes". In order to have data for WN you have to compare it to either the prior schedule or the schedule from the prior year. Comparing to the prior schedule is flawed because of seasonal changes. Comparing to the prior year schedule is flawed because things show up more than once, but I'd argue that with the way that WN now does schedule changes, you can't really be sure if a route is truly gone until it is gone for a year.

I generally mark routes that are completely dropped to zero or added from zero plus multiple frequency changes in a market. I also mark it if it appears to be competitive reaction.

I never understood FL's inability to get local passengers on MDW-MSP when they flew it, but WN seems to do much better with the locals in on that route. Granted, it's not an apples to apples comparison because FL is larger in MKE than at MDW and WN is much smaller in MKE than at MDW, but it seems to me - and this is a sense, nothing empirical - that WN is better at finding local passengers on this short or medium-short haul markets than FL.

The traffic is seasonal, but CVG-SEA has never been seasonal.

I saw it but just didn't read a whole lot into it, it's a January-only cut with January arguably being the slowest travel month...nothing earth-shattering IMO.
