Quite The Story: SGU Closed After Incident W Plane

Tue Jul 17, 2012 3:20 pm

Fair use from the news story below:

"The St. George Airport was closed Tuesday following an incident involving a SkyWest plane. The terminal at the airport sustained minor damage and vehicles in the parking lot were also damaged as well as a SkyWest plane, according to St. George spokesman Mark Mortensen. The FBI and St. George police are investigating the incident."

Maybe someone took a joyride?

Whatever it is will turn out to be a good story. It involved the plane, the terminal, and cars in the parking lot, and the FBI is investigating. I'm thinking someone jumped in the plane for a joyride, or jumped in a car for a joyride?

Not much more info, but there is a photo in this article: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...g-incident-with-SkyWest-plane.html

There is a quote from Skywest in the article: "While the airport was closed overnight, a SkyWest aircraft at the St. George Municipal Airport in Utah was involved in a ground incident while the aircraft was not in service." It also says this started around 3am.

Appears to be the other way around. Drunk gets in plane, hits terminal and runs into parking lot. LOL

They were quick painting over the tail - the first photos there clearly show the Delta Connection livery - in the later ones (like the one in reply 7) the plane (at least the tail) is grey.

Edit - it looks like it is wrapped, not painted.

Not serious, of course, but wonder how this can happen in 2012.

Given that the OO corporate headquarters is in St. George, they probably have the top brass managing the damage control.

Could it have been a sabotage act by a disgruntled OO person (current or ex)? Considering it's the HQ, it's more than a coincidence, no?

Those pictures show quite the damage to that airplane! I wonder what happened for this occur? That is going to be one juicy NTSB report for sure, unless it was a simple case of not chalking the jet right.

A fugitive tried to steal the plane and committed suicide after he crashed it. Probably would have been much better off with a prop, it doesn't look like he had much experience with jets.

Allegedly a Skywest Pilot who had a really bad day was the one found in the plane.

This story indicates that he clipped the jet bridge with the wingtip and may have dragged the jet bridge around. You can see in the photos that the leftt winglet appears to be broken off. I believe that SGU has only one jet bridge.

Yes and news reports are saying the person was a pilot for Skywest.

Horrible story, however it is better that only one life was lost vs a plane full.

Probably nothing good. What happened is probably just about the best case scenario, with the exception of not letting him get in the fence in the first place.

Perhaps somebody more familiar with airline ops can answer this: The plane was overnighting at SGU, and presumably was set to operate the early morning flight to SLC. Would it have been fueled up for the trip the previous evening, or do they wait until morning to fuel the plane? I'm just trying to figure out how far the guy might have been able to go if he had gotten off the ground. I wonder if he had a destination in mind. Perhaps there will be some clues about that destination left in the cockpit. I'm getting the idea that he probably was trying to fly away, but was thwarted when he clipped the jet bridge.

I doubt he was trying to "fly away." After allegedly murdering someone, and being suspended by his employer, I doubt he was trying to run away from his problems by flying away in a stolen commercial airplane.

I agree that it would be near impssible to run away and disappear with a commercial airplane, and he certainly understood that too. But I still wonder if he was planning to do something truly crazy. Take a joy ride to Vegas, go crash into the Grand Canyon, make a run for Mexico, something like that. It's hard not to speculate.

Colorado Springs to St George is quite a trip on a motorcycle! I bet he was headed to Vegas or Mexico and got scared i mean he was wanted for murder so he probably paniced into this awful plan. What a shame this happened to such a new and beautiful airport. He probably would have had a much better chance to steal a much smaller plane at a smaller airport but i doubt he was thinking clearly being wanted for murder

Why would they bother? The world already has more CR2's than we need. Now a -700 or 900 might be a different matter.

Now that I look at some more pictures, I'm almost shocked at this time of night it wasn't immediately noticed that the engines were starting. I've never been to St. George but looks like a tiny airport.

"Patrolling the airport" means a lot more than doing donuts around a 10,000 sq ft. passenger terminal. It means patrolling THE AIRPORT. You know, the OTHER 300 acres.

A/c are fueled before it's scheduled flight not the night before. Even if it's a RON.

At the risk of sounding paranoid, is it just me or does it seem like a lot of "strange" things seem to be happening to Delta, and Delta-related carriers, post 9/11?
