United.com Broken?

Tue Jul 17, 2012 5:57 pm

Does anyone know whats up with united.com? Is it possible to run a major airline without a computer reservation system?

Not good. Nobody schedules such a thing for daytime in the USA, usually Friday or Saturday overnight.

Seems the entire site is down. I even got a message the phone reservations lines are down as well. There were some award redemption glitches over the weekend, I wonder if in fixing them, someone got a bit aggressive and the whole site crashed.

It's been working for me. I just spent the past 20 mins or so on it.

Works some times for me, then doesn't work a bit later.

United posted on their Facebook account that they know there are issues with their website and they're working to resolve it as soon as possible.

I had a problem earlier this morning trying to look up flights. The system told me they couldn't look up EWR or SJD.

Well, I'm a Continental flyer, so I'm used to the continental.com which is now renamed united.com.
I miss the greater capabilities of the united website, but have learned to live with this one.
That said, NO, you can't run a major airline by taking paper reservations anymore.... it's just not practical or feasible.

And, websites crash. Have YOU ever dealt with an IT department? Rarely do you get anywhere quickly.....
At my carrier, we can wait a week for a laser printer toner cartridge to be replaced. They won't let us do it ourselves, either... because we're mechanics, we couldn't possibly figure out how to change a toner cartridge.

Be patient- spit happens.

Not only have I dealt with them, I RAN an IT department for what is now one of the biggest companies in the US, but they weren't so big back then.

I also had a very unpleasant exchange one day with Max Hopper who was in charge of Sabre (I think) at that time while visiting AA in Tulsa. I was working on an unrelated system, but I do recall him threatening my life if I caused Sabre to crash. He claimed it would cost AA $50,000 per minute in lost revenue and delayed flights!

While I was in the computer room I did witness a 10 minute Sabre database crash which had nothing to do with my work. I just smiled.
