Spirit Doing Surprisingly Well W/ PDX-DFW

Wed Jul 18, 2012 3:30 am

Spirit Airlines on June 21st 2012 stated a PDX-DFW DFW-PDX route. They went into it knowing perfectly well that American already has a 4 time daily route between PDX and DFW. But Spirit is doing well even with the times. From PDX to DFW you have to take off at 12:40 AM compared to AA's 2:00 PM. Flying back it takes off from DFW at 11:00 PM and lands at 12:50 AM! Yet they are still doing well.

By whose estimation are they "doing well" and what metrics are used to determine that?

It too am a bit confused..

Quoting planesdude (Thread starter):

What exactly are you basing this "success" on? A route, by your own admission, that has been running for a whopping 27 days?

If you're talking passenger numbers, that shouldn't be too hard considering this is the absolute busiest time of the year for air travel.

Spirit is a late night airline? (reminds me of America West Las Vegas late night flights)

I haven't checked Spirit's full schedule but

Spirit DFW-PDX arrival time is 12:50 AM ?
Spirit PDX-DFW departure time is 12:40 AM ?

Two different planes?

Maybe next we'll see PDX-DTW or PDX-FLL with NK.

The departure from PDX is an aircraft that comes in from LAS, it used to RON at PDX then go back to LAS, now it goes to DFW, and about 10-20 mins after it leaves, the Dallas flight arrives into PDX to become the morning LAS departure.

PDX-FLL, I wonder if AS would start a PDX-FLL as well, AS is not above having a pissing match with other carriers (WN) to name one. That would certainly be the longest scheduled flight for NK in N. America. I'd guess it would be the 319.

I can offer my personal experience to this conversation, but not until Sept 13th when we get back from Dallas on NK.

PDX-DTW very unlikely as while they have not downsized DTW lately, Spirit has not added much to what was once its largest hub. Just additions to ORD and DFW, which have been the focus of its expansion in the last year or so. I just don't see a large enough market between the 2 and DTW has very limited eastbound connections these days for NK.

PDX-FLL, again, I just wouldn't guess there is the market for such a long, thin route on NK. Im guessing that the few PDX-FLL and beyond passengers are routed adequately through DFW and LAS.

OTOH I could definitely see PDX- ORD in the future if they every get more gates in O'hare, and some other "connecting of the dots" on the west coast out of Portland. PDX-SAN (to link up with Cabo and possible future Mexican expantion out of SAN) , LAX, OAK, maybe AZA, and who knows, Maybe a jumping off point for ANC if NK ever decides to go there.

planes sitting on the ground make zero money. even if they only break even on the flight itself, the added utilization helps the overall bottom line.

If they make money on the flight, then that is just icing on the cake.

sounds like a win win to me and the way it should be.
When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No-one has ever collided with the sky.

This is why Spirit has a bunch of flights throughout the system that operate at odd hours of the night. If the fare is low enough, people will fly.

I guess my price was $115.16 for two passengers to fly PDX-DFW for a night. The flight times do allow us to maximise our two days in Dallas, in fact one could do a day trip to Dallas from Portland (and elsewhere in the West) for a long one day business trip.

Well? If they are doing "well" it is important to note that NK usually does very well in terms of traffic at the beginning. Time will tell more.

Well, it helps to use data. The market is 134 passengers each day each way local and there is non-stop service for only a few months of Summer on one Delta flight. It's actually one of the larger markets in the U.S. without year-round service. I still don't expect NK to add it, however. They are very focused on DFW.

I can guarantee you one thing, if it doesn't do well, Spirit will not hesitate to pull the plug.... I know they take crap sometimes for pulling out of routes quickly, but if it doesnt make money, why fly it??

I hope NK sticks around long enough for us to fly to Dallas and back, anything after Sept 13th is fine.

Well I am basing it off of a financial aspect showing that NK is doing well financially w/ the PDX-DFW route.

But crews have to overnight correct? That's what probs $70 (corporate deal with hotel) x 5 (crew)? That adds up I would think no?

What would the allocated cost for a DFW -PHX flight be?

There's no such thing that would be accessible to someone that wasn't working for the company in a position that required access to that information. Airlines don't provide information for public consumption that breaks out financial performance on each individual route they fly. You can find information about numbers of passengers flying a particular route, etc but this route is so new I'm not even sure that information would be available just yet.

Not sure what he said, but if you find out please let me know please Bob? The thread is of interest to me, as I'm flying this route in less than 2 months, so it's performance is of concern to me, but I agree some answers were less than informative. I do wish some NK folks would comment to what they can, or to weigh in their personal observations to add credence to this thread.
