Where Are TG's A340-500s Stored?

Thu Jul 19, 2012 8:00 pm

Ok, we all know that TG WFU the A340-500 from the fleet. Does anyone know where TG stored the aircraft? BKK? Returned to lessor and taken to the desert?

HS-TLA/B/C are all stored in BKK but each took local (test) flights during June.

HS-TLD appears to be doing some Government flying and is currently in Paris having been to Berlin earlier this week, along with possibly some other European destinations.

Many thanks guys to say such nice things about the A345 , which is one of my favourite birds .
I am still surprised that no more EU members answer that topic , Let It Be !

Concerning the HS- TLD , thanks to your info, i have just known by a friend of mine , that she is at ORY for a gouvernment mission

Brings up a question, since the A345 is a long range, quad and quiet, she seems ideal for other governments as a state platform. UK, Germany, etc. Wonder if Thai could sell these at an attractive price.

I would like to add a PA 707 and a TW 757 to this Museum of Astetics. Guess we also better put the Super Guppy in there too.

Given they don't know what to do with these aircraft and Airbus still have some unsold green tails, I wonder if they'll put them back into service like Emirates and misuse them on routes to Europe just to add capacity.

I'd be absolutely delighted if the RAF bought them up as strategic lift to ease the pressure on the Tristar/Vc10/Voyager fleet.

They have enormous under-floor cargo capacity and i think as troop transports they'd do very well in a QC config - RAF can then change the layout and interior if VIP transport etc is needed. I'd guess the fact that they can easily do Brize - Falklands non-stop at full payload would make them attractive as well. Just carrying troops and their kit and no cargo they could probably go anywhere on the planet non-stop near enough I'd have thought.

Could pick up all four for considerably less than the price of one new Voyager and about half the price of a new C17 (whcih we also need more of, very badly).

Could you also fit them with wingtip refueling pods like the Tristars have?

Common type rating with the Voyagers.
Same Trent engine cores and spares trains/pools.
Pretty low-cycle airframes, not been worked very hard.
Immaculately maintained and in great condition considering.
Similar ramp footprint to the Voyagers and share the same GSE / handling equipment.

I'm sure they are looking at them. Madness not to be, frankly.

Agreed. As relatively inefficient as the 345 is, parking such young aircraft seems premature, unless Thai is losing $ and needs to shrink to a profitable core.

They are roughly comparable to a 744 in trip costs - perhaps 10% less in fuel but they carry a lot less pax. The 744s are paid off, the A345s are not full amortised yet so are costing money in financing.

A fully paid off, debt free A345 is still an efficient machine. Just not as efficient as the 744/A346

Since this is quasi related to the LAX since the A345s were mostly dedicated to the LAX run, around April 2013 ish or so, LAX will become a TG 747 route offering F/Biz/Y, which I think is great news!

Is this a IYO or is there something official stating this. Quite surprising since the 747 is not very economical.

I just find the nose section of the 747 claustrophobic when 10-12 suites are present. Even BA's new FIRST - which looks magnificent - seems packed in this picture:

LH's new First Class cabin on the 747-8 does look spacious, probably because they have only 8 suites:

Actually I had the same idea, but I was thinking about the A345 still owned by Airbus. The German "Flugbereitschaft" being part of the Air Force purchased two used former LH A340-313X and some new smaller aircrafts from Airbus (A319 CJ) and Bombardier (Global 5000). So there will be no German A345.

We need a Museum of Aviation Aesthetics to preserve such frames.

I totally agree with you (and some other Airnutters). There are so many beautiful machines waiting out there. Not to mention historic airframes that have managed to survive the ravages of time, only to meet the scrapman after several decades of service (while brand-new machines are already being parted out). As an older Airnutter - and a nostalgic one at that - I would love to see more aviation history preserved. I love the idea of a Museum of Aviation Aesthetics. There is only one problem: there are too many airplanes to choose from. Every airplane is beautiful in its own way, the Super Guppy included.

But I regress... er, digress. Back to those Thai A350s: I am amazed to hear that they are sitting there, getting dirty and moldy. It seems like just yesterday (sorry about the cliche) that Thai was taiking out full-page advertisements in aviation enthusasts' magazines, announcing the "first nonstop flight on the longest air route in the world," proclaiming it as an "histroric event." That choice of wording is indeed ironic in this context!

Once, these were the wave of the future. Some dreams fade fast.

IIRC, ZS-OOS was DBR after hitting a rather large pothole in the taxi way.

IMO, DBR is not the same as being retired.

My understanding is that the DC8's career was also ended prematurely.

The 345 is one of my favourite aircraft around, I have flown on SQ's numerous times and every flight has been amazing. I wish an airline would pick these birds up so they don't end up in the scrapyard.

I sure hope these pretty Aircraft find new homes - and fast. It would be sad if they met a similar fate to the ex-Olympic Airbus A340s. Always sad to see such beautiful aircraft being retired from service. I'd take an A340 over a 747 any day of the week.
