Previous United Paint Scheme Questions

Mon Jul 23, 2012 2:05 am

Howdy,

I was wondering if anyone has some information on the United Saul Bass paint scheme seen in the 1980s and 1990s.

1. When was this paint job formally launched, and on what type?
2. When did the battleship paint scheme first debut and on what type?
3. When did the last Saul Bass painted bird get painted into the battleship colors, and what type was it?

Thanks,
Ryan

1. 1974. Don't remember the type but I think it was a DC-10.

2. 1992. 757, three of them at once...

3. Many never were, having been parted out that way. I think the last in service was sometime between 1997 & 1999. Last one I flew was a 742 in 1996.

1. When was this paint job formally launched, and on what type?

September 1974 (per United Airlines Colors (by EXAAUADL Nov 8 2008 in Civil Aviation)#menu27 )

January 11, 1993.
Possible that a 747-400 was the first. * ( Per http://www.kls2.com/cgi-bin/arcfetch...iners.1993.69@ohare.chicago.com%3E )

Wiki says it was 1999.

Not much help in the airliners.net photo database, only 3 pics in 1993 of the new scheme. This is the oldest.

BTW There is a nice thread on the variations of the Saul Bass livery: United 1982 Experimental Livery? (by Tango-Bravo Aug 5 2009 in Civil Aviation) .

Not true. The grey scheme debuted in January 1993 on a 747-400 flight from SFO-NRT.

Alright, so Jan 1993 on a B744 kicked off the Battleship gray.

Any additional information on when the last active UA bird was painted into Battleship colors?
