Iran Civil Aviation Organization Suspends Airline

Wed Jul 25, 2012 4:39 pm

In what appears to be a first, the Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) of Iran has suspended a local airline for "safety reasons and non-compliance with regulations".

http://www.tehrantimes.com/politics/...or-non-compliance-with-regulations

I am truly impressed by this, as it seems for the first time the CAO is enforcing safety regulations and taking those who don't comply to task. If only they'd have started acting like this sooner, maybe hundreds of lives could have been saved.

In another positive recent development, the CAO came first place in an air safety audit conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, beating even the regional aviation giants like Dubai, Qatar and Abu Dhabi:

Hamid Reza Pahlevani, the head of the CAO has only been in the job for a couple of months and is already making astonishing ground in air safety matters. Lets pray that this continues so that the Iranian people can enjoy respectable air safety standards like so many other countries do.

Wow, that's impressive, congratulations to Pahlevani.

What an irony that despite all the sanctions in place Iran ranks first in ME in terms of aviation safety

Will be curious to learn which airline - and btw I am amused by the attempt at discretion - don't see how it will stay secret for long, I mean sooner or later someone will notice that ATA, or Caspian, or one of them, hasn't moved for six days.

But since the secret's not out yet, I'm going to say it's not Iran Air Tours, Zagros, Caspian, Saha, Meraj, Aria or Homa. Which leaves ATA and Fars Air Qeshm. One of which is an unknown quantity and one scared the crap out of me.

Good to see Iran do everything it can to run a safe operation in it's busy skies.

I would like to believe that this is genuine.

However, I find this whole secrecy thing rather suspect.

This secrecy is a little weird. But Saha flights have been canceled since yesterday. So it might be a candidate.

Why would it? The Iranian government recently said they are looking at privatizing Iran Air, that only goes to prove they are trying to get rid of loss making ventures they are responsible for.

If it is indeed Saha, the secrecy thing actually would make sense - the CAO would not want to publicize that the government (air force) was breaking its own regulations...

Saha is not only goverment owned, it is a part of the Iranian Air Force (IRIAF).

Perhaps the new operator Meraj Air will replace Saha Air? Who can tell me more about Meraj Air?

Anyone think this might be a power struggle? New head of CAO grounds the IRIAF owned airline (assuming it is Saha). Could he be exercising his muscles to make a point to the air force?

Does anyone know where EP-SHU and EP-SHV are parked now given Saha is not flying? Are they are Mehrabad?

It is basically contains the Iranian government VIP fleet, though some commercial flight are undertaken. The latter appear to be charters as far as I can tell.

While all of the aircraft in the Meraj fleet have civil (EP-) registration, some are clearly IRIAF aircraft.

Interesting website! It appears Iran is where many A300s and MD-80s go to end their lives lately.
