Congrats to UA/CO. That's an impressive figure, especially considering the expenses involved with the merger. I just hope they can see their way to include the employees in the increasing profits, as everyone I know who works there is complaining about how bad the work conditions have become since the merger. I'd like to see the airline once again become a place where all the employees see it as a wonderful place to be employed.

Really impressive numbers, and the synergies of the merger are not even fully realized yet. They need to get a deal worker out with the unions so everyone could move forward.

According to FlyerTalk, UA lost eleventy-billon dollars in Q2.

Because they think GS'es and 1K's alone would be enough to flip a company between profit and loss.

It's actually not impressive at all when considering it is a decline of 37% in net income year-over-year; the decrease of $228 million in operating profit is far larger than the $60 million increase in integration costs, that increase largely due to severance paid to terminated employees.

It's also disappointing when you look at metrics like passenger RASM -- up only 1.8% year-over-year compared to 8.5% at Delta or 5.5% at Southwest.

To the first part of your statement, I'd say that it's also tied to a disproportionate increase in OpEx.

The Revenue side, I believe is tied to the fact that the operation has horrid through most of Q2. I believe Q3 will probably show a much more telling picture of the new company because some of the support mechanisms to help things run more smoothly will have been put in place.

Interesting: the updated fleet plan shows no 787's until the fourth quarter. Previous forecasts had been for the initial delivery in September.

Edit: Never mind. The earnings conference said delivery will still be in Sept. EIS in fourth quarter.

Trouble is, as UA managers know from the summer of 2000, passengers who drive RASM gains tend to have long memories regarding operational problems.

But, as much as we love to vilify how HORRIBLE UA is performing right now, if you graph the A:14 by "months post merger" UA's on-time performance has mirrored DL's performance to a scary degree, it's almost identical. And DL did see a large decline in on-time in the time-frame we are in right now.

At least from what I've seen, on-time isn't the issue as much as horrendous handling of IROPS.

Yet these days when there's a delay, it's epic -- almost newsworthy. I've waited at both SFO and IAH up to 4 1/2 hours for "delayed incoming aircraft."

Btw, kudos to UA for being completely honest about delays and for courageously *not* hitting to 'cancel' button.

Some conference call notes..lots of this has been reported before:

54 mil in profit sharing YTD

paid off two of the most costly pieces of debt on the balance books
4 billion debt paid off over the last two years
$8.2 Billion in unrestricted liquidity (cash and a $500 million undrawn line of credit)
$959 million in operating cash flow in Q2
9 more 73E and 5 788 to join the fleet later this year
five year fleet plan keeps the fleet around the same size for the period

A:14 has been horrid. That's for sure. That's why Ops had to pad some time on the sUA 752's.
There are still changes in procedures going on, and hopefully the computer systems will get straightened out to a user friendly and easy interface for all involved.
(On a personal note: I'm still learning UNIMATIC, and not used to leaving the ramp to close out a flight. Hopefully the scanner issues get updated, where we can use the scanner for close-outs planeside)

I hope the changes work.

I've heard - but haven't confirmed - that one of the problems with the arrivals on-time percentage is the lack of spare aircraft.

Interesting observation and I sincerely hope you're on target. Time will tell - IIRC, July is running worse than June.

It was "wait until satellite wi-fi becomes available so it will actually work all the time" and so essentially, no there wasn't a timeline pre-merger.

If I get motivated later I'll grab the DOT stats and put em together (wouldn't show summer though) I didn't put together the chart I was shown so I don't have they same data they used.

About the same...early 2013 finish for installing the lie flats on the 777's...

Nice that they will have the 763/764 fleet done as well.

Sounded like they had already started adding the extra spares to the system...

Biggest tidbit out of the call today regarding aircraft was the new interiors for the Airbus aircraft.

Whoops! I was on Wi-fi. UA's timeline was for better or worse slowed down slightly through the merger for 777 IPTE.
