Kulula's Ridiculously Posh New Boeing

Thu Jul 26, 2012 3:22 pm

Passengers traveling from Lanseria International Airport on no-frills airline kulula.com were in for a surprise when it launched its spanking new Boeing 737-800. “To launch we could have hosted a VIP party, invited a few ministers, celebrities and suits. Instead, in true kulula fashion, we turned the usual order of events on its head and celebrated with those VIPS that really matter – our passengers,” says Erik Venter, CEO of kulula.com.

Fantastic. Just utterly fantastic. It's doing things like this that can realy set an airline apart from the rest.
Have fund and put a touch of magic back into flying. While I know this flight was extra posh and overboard as a one off, but having the sense of humour to do that in the first place makes me want to fly them all the same!
I wish Kulula were a UK domestic airline!

Well done Kulula and long may you enjoy tail winds.

Kulula's Ridiculously Posh New Boeing

Great video,
One question, changing the subject slightly, are all the new 737-800s going to operate under the Kulula brand?

I fly with both the BA and Kulula side of this operation, and the BA branded aircraft are noticeably a bit tattier on the inside... Putting brand new 737-800s on the Kulula operation while keeping 25 year old 737-3/400s on the BA side of things seems a bit nuts given the relative fares paid.

On the plus side BA/Comairs "Club" service beats the pants off "Club Europe"...! Separate starter tray, choice of 3 hot main courses, separate choice of deserts or cheese, and a full bar service... all on a 90 minute sector... and all hand-run (no trolleys)... amazing. The only thing they let themselves down on is the middle seat, the rows convert to increase seat width and lose the B seat, but unlike BA they don't leave the middle seat free on the DEF side.

Good product though... Would love to see the 737-800 offering it!

Not bad. Nice to see an airline treat passengers like passengers and not cattle, even if it is a one time thing. Reminded me of "the old days" when flying was something special. We used to wear our best Sunday suits, not halter tops, cut off short shorts, and flip flops. I could have done with out the roving violin player and vocalist though.

Wow, an airline that actually considered its passengers. A novel concept. Love the comment about the free O2. I could see FR or NK charging a fee for O2......

Everything else made the event "posh." Without the violinist and vocalist it wouldn't have been "ridiculously posh."

IMO, the current offerings of the carriers reflect what society, in general is. Air travel was classier back then because the travelers were classier (and willing to pay). Now they're just exactly what you described.

It was classier back then because most people couldn't afford it - it was not about who was WILLING to pay those fares it was about who COULD pay those fares. That is why flying was classier back then

I think the First Choice B757 was chartered for a World Tour.

Those were the days! UA used to serve a FULL breakfast on the 45-50 min hop between CLE and ORD ... was great and the F/A's were awesome and treated people so well!

That is so very true! Employee families couldn't even think about wearing jeans/levis, even if they were brand new!

Great airline.

I have flown with them a couple of times and not only do they beat any other low-cost airline in South Africa, they also beat SA by FAR. Every flight feels special and focused toward keeping the pax (Or as they like to call them: "Kulula fans") happy, yet still being professional. Can't wait to fly their new 738!
