BMI Baby Crew Shortage

Fri Jul 27, 2012 7:08 am

Just visited EMA where most of the BMI Baby fleet was sitting around not stirring. Sad to see Be My Baby preparing for closure in September. Talk was that 45% of the pilots have already left having found jobs elsewhere. ANy thoughts on what will happen to the aircraft when it goes?

So, is there a crew shortage, or did you make this up?

bmi baby have reduced flying this summer tremendously just to make sure that it can operate all flights without a hitch and bmi baby staff actually get ample time from the company to look for and start other jobs. I have visited their offices a month ago and met with their CEO and many of their staff and I was very impressed on how they handle this shutdown.

So, no crew shortage then.

The only aircraft that should be sitting around are the aircraft that were withdrawn from service after the cutbacks at BHD and reduced timetables at BHX and EMA.

There should be no aircraft sat around that should be operating the current schedules. Unless the airline is using the whole fleet to operate the current reduced schedule and so each aircraft is having less cycles each day.

Really pleased if it is the case crew have found jobs elsewhere, in the current financial climate. With the likes of FlyBE and Monarch increasing ops at both BHX and EMA, there should hopefully be a few vacancies for these crew.

I'd imagine the airline would have offered crew incentives to stay until the end of ops at BMI Baby, otherwise the airline could have potentially ended with no staff before closure in September.

Which is what they're doing actually. So far no aircraft has left the fleet, the 735's were supposed to go first, but they're still around and active.

They're rotating the use of the whole fleet rather than having parked some units - there's usually 5 or 6 parked on the ramp at EMA but the specific aircraft that are parked tends to vary from day to day

Monarch's new services from EMA and BHX are initially going to be on Small Planet and Air Italy 737s, so not many jobs there in the short term - Monarch haven't got the aircraft to operate the new routes themselves until next year

Reduced crew has led to reduced services already. Not sure if Monarch will in any way replace the capacity though as I hear they are basing only one 737 at EMA initially. Does anyone know the passenger numbers for EMA at all? I recall reading about VC companies buying airports and needing 5m passengers a year to make it pay after that there's a lot of profit.

As per Wikipedia, passenger numbers peaked in 2008 at 5.6 million, but declined by 25% to 4.2 million in 2011 making it the 12th busiest airport in the UK by passenger traffic. It was the second busiest UK airport for freight traffic in 2011.

I think the loss of EasyJet at EMA didn't help, they said that pax numbers were below their expectation, hence them pulling out, but from a personal view they had a lot of flights at unsociable hours so i reckon punters may well have gone with other carriers. Beyond that the recession doesnt help of course.

I like to see the freight traffic doing well here at EMA, apart from the jobs it provides, it must help the airport keep its head above water financially.
There isnt really a dark side to the moon, as a matter of fact its all dark!

Sorry, but Reduced crew doesn't mean a crew shortage. The airline has seriously hacked their schedule for summer 2012.
