BA Leasing A 744 To QF?

Sun Oct 15, 2000 6:03 pm

Hello,

Some people report that Qantaq will be be leasing a British Airways 747-400 for 12 months. The aircraft would be G-BNLH, currently based at LGW.

The aircraft, due to November to Australia, would keep its BA livery and registration.

The inflight entertainment would be upgraded on this aircraft as preparation for Qantas.

Anyone confirming please?
Also, what are the plans for this additional 747-400 in Qantas' fleet?

Most of that info is correct. Except from what I have heard the aircraft will be painted in QF colors and registered as VH-NLH.

I would expect this aircraft to be used on most services operated by 744 in the QF Network.

It is wanted by Qantas to cover the installation of the new IFE (In Flight Enternatainment) in the 744's. (including PTV's)

Yes, I have heard that rumour too and can now confirm it. The aircraft is due for arrival in Australia in November, and will be used whilst Qantas is upgrading inflight entertainment (PTV's in economy) on one of its own 744's, although i dont know which.
Supposedly the aircraft will be used on Qantas' daily Melbourne-Sydney-Narita service, or the famous Kangaroo route from Melbourne and Sydney to LHR.
Also the aircraft may be used on the Syd-Lax serivices.
I hope this helps.

Hello,

Thank you for confirming.

What route upgrade or new service would justify leasing this additional 747-400 for only 12 months please?

Thank you,

The reason this aircraft is being leased (As mentioned above) is to cover the fitting of the new IFE into QF's 744 fleet. It is just operating the services of the aircraft that is being upgraded!

There is no Route upgrade or new service.
This aircraft it is just filling in for other aircraft while they are being fitted with the new IFE!!

I agree that this aircraft would only be used to fill capacity whilst normal Qantas 744's are offline being refitted, I however doubt very much if it would be used on the NRT sectors. Currently Qantas only operate 747-300's or smaller on all sectors to NRT & NGO. There is no First Class offered by Qantas, JAL or ANA on these sectors due to their large tourist load factors. I'm sure you will find the ex-BA 744 operating to LHR, LAX, CDG etc

So how many planes are planned to be refitted?
Is it just the 747-400's or any other types?

Cheers,
