AF A380 Routes?

Sun Jul 29, 2012 8:52 pm

Air France currently has 8 A380 aircraft, and they have orders for 4 more. They currently have the following routes from CDG : JNB, LAX, YUL (ends 10/2012), JFK, NRT, IAD, and SIN, or a grand total of 6 destinations to be maintained.
So what does AF plan to do with 12 A380s on 6 routes?
Honestly, I could see AF doing CDG-KUL-SYD using an A380, but does anyone else have any idea of any new A380 routes that could be opened? Perhaps PEK, SFO and possibly restarting DXB?

Thanks for any info,

Well they do fly to JFK where they pick on the smaller little airplanes.

IAH could be a possibility since UA will cancel the IAH-CDG route.

It might be 6 routes, but you need more than 6 planes to operate these routes. JNB and SIN, in particular, both require 2 A380's each to operate daily. Even NRT requires more than 1 A380 for a daily service, as the plane arrives back in CDG two hours after the outbound A380 leaves for NRT.

Granted YUL and SIN are not daily services, but in essence, bare minimum, you would need 8 A380's for these 6 routes.

If AF were to add KUL and PEK as A380 destinations, you would need 12 A380's for these 8 routes.

Therefore, as you can see, all that AF can do is add two more Asian destinations (11 + hours), and they will soon be maxed out with their A380 utilization.

Unfortunately, neither of these will ever happen. SYD would need at least 2 380's to operate and would see huge competition from the Gulf 3 as well as SQ, CX etc. AF would see better returns from other destinations.
IAH would never see the demand to fill a 380, hence why UA can't even run a 767 to CDG.

Don't forget LAX. That makes 7 routes. Coudl AF possibly ever consider going 2x daily a388s to JFK?

AF does not fly today to KUL or SYD, so if they wanted to open these new routes, it would surely not be with an A380. But in any case, whatever the aircraft, there is 0.00000001% chance that they will fly again one day to SYD.

PEK and PVG are likely destinations (PVG first) but they will need to discuss heavily with Chinese authorities (remember the troubles LH had to start PVG with A380). DXB, why not. SFO : no, too much premium seats in AF current configuration of A380. ABJ has also been rumored these last months (but airport needs A380 upgrade)
Why not also a 2nd daily to JFK ? And I believe ATL could see one day an AF A380.

Probably not allowed by the bilateral either at more than 3/week. That's what QF are limited to into CDG, which is why they haven't flown it for a while so they say.

KE announced some months ago that they would go to ATL with A380 but I don't think they have started yet.

My opinion AF and KE are the only airlines in the world that could justify sending the A380 into ATL... only those two could make it work with the aid of Delta

It has not started. I believe that it was announced to start at some point in 2013. However, others might know of a more specific date. I believe they are still upgrading the taxiways for the plane currently.

I am flying AF to Singapore in September and would love for them to go daily as I am currently booked on 777's which shows every seat taken both directions. (I know the seat map can be an innacurate judge, but normally there are far more seats open on long-haul even if they are blocking a couple out)

No European airline is planing to return to SYD and certainly not AF.
KUL (as well as DPS) is planned by AF, but as a "leisure" and seasonal destination, and in continuation of the CDG-BKK flight.

SFO & DXB : no way. Both were very temporary destinations, chosen more and before any reason because they were "convenient" for an A380 service during a short period.

PVG (as well as PEK) will be started as soon as the dispute between China and the E.U will be solved.
HKG is also expected sooner or later.

ABJ was expected for W12/13 but is now abandoned due to "technical" problems (Handling in ABJ and operations difficulties in case of diversion ).

GIG is planned for next winter and is currently the most serious candidate to become the next AF A380 destination.
(CDG-GIG will be then reduced from 2 x Daily A332 + B744 to 1 x Daily A380).

ATL being DL's HUB # 1, Frequencies are preferred over capacity so I doubt AF will send its A380 there ...

ATL is not a route doing well with P class ... We used to have 772 with P class : most of the time 0 pax on P; now we put the 772 with no P (35J/W/Y)

The AF 380 does not do too good on CDG-SIN at all : SQ,EK, EY are often cheaper and offer very nice service; I doubt AF will leave it on this route

PVG PEK HKG & GRU are more likely the routes which will be served by the A380; indeed those routes have double daily services and offer P class

I understand that AF isn't in the best financial position, but does anyone care to speculate whether they might top up their A380 order to say 20 or even just 1 or 2?

Hope it's not Y class on a cramped 10-abreast AF 777. There are many much more comfortable Y class routes to SIN than AF (or anyone else with 10-abreast on 777s). The A380 is MUCH better.

Regrettably it is on my dime, so yes it is in the back. However, we normally wait for the premium voyager to go on sale. Worse comes to worse we sit in the back 7 across section. Not great, but not as bad as some I have been on!
