Wed Aug 01, 2012 8:20 pm

KSAT (San Antonio) is closed. According to the local station the terminals were evacuated due to a bomb threat (possibly abandonded luggage) with many people out on the tarmac.

Flightaware stills shows flights landing at SAT. I'm guessing they are just not going to the terminal for a while?

Is it a bomb threat or a suspicious package? They are not the same thing. Airports/terminals get closed all the time because of over-reaction to suspicious packages. Bomb threats usually involve a sweep first to see if there is any evidence of it being real, as they are called in very often. Now, if it was a threat that then turned up a package/luggage, that is a very serious situation, far more than the first two conditions.

The news report said threat then suspicious package. Word has it that the item appreared to be suspicious, not just abandoned.

News said call in threat started this. 3 cars in the underground garage got positive results from the bomb sniffing dogs and bomb techs are clearing the cars.

They're still landing planes, though. Wouldn't they have them divert or circle if the ythought there was a threat?

Why? No bomb in the garage or the terminal would impact a landing aircraft. They will simply park them away from the terminals until all is clear.

This is why I loathe any media source. Which one is it? A suspicious package or a suspicious car?

Sometimes they don't have the full details or are hearing conflicting things. Of course, they could be responsible and NOT report anything they can't confirm, but confirmation doesn't seem to be a priority these days.

I live in Houston and my news station got info from the local NBC station in San Antonio that someone called in to report that three cars parked in the short term parking garage had explosives. Dogs were brought in and they acted as if there were explosives in the cars and the cars were cleared from the airport. They evacuated both terminals and the news station showed people sitting on the tarmac with all of their luggage. Of course I'm not believing everything I hear but this is the info they have so far. Crazy stuff.

From Channel 8 in Dallas

The all clear has been given and the airport is getting back to normal operations.

The photos show people standing out on the airside ramps areas (photos 1, 5 & 8), 10 planes parked out away from the terminal (photo 3), and a lot of unhappy people outside the terminal.

It was about 100 degrees F outside in the shade when this happened.

Is that a WN 738 in photo 11? If so, where was it headed? LAS? BWI? I know flight 683 to LAS was leaving around this time.

I agree with ikramerica. Confirmation is not a priority. Even the facts are not a priority when the media has the facts. With all of the added hype and hysteria added to reports they become more stories than anything and you are left wondering what to believe. The media is a loathsome bunch. Glad to hear ops are back to normal. Whatever "normal" is.
