WN STL-DCA Now Official

Wed Aug 01, 2012 9:58 pm

They're all set to expand their DCA presence. Wonder when we'll see MDW-DCA come online?

Very good news. I wonder if STL was chosen as a back up to the proposed DCA-OKC not being awarded to WN?
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

No, this service was made possible by WN's purchase of NK's DCA slots. NK is now terminating all of its DCA flights in favor of service to BWI.

OKC was to be served with AIR 21 slots, this service is just regular ol' in perimeter slots. NK has a pair of AIR 21 slots out there still, so it'll be interesting to see of WN applies for those to get OKC-DCA going or if they'll just move on to the next option.

I wonder, now that NK is out of the D.C.-Myrtle Beach market, WN will consider service to MYR? I bet they can compete with US's daily CR2.

No chance. CHS can only support a miniscule station right down the road with a much larger and less seasonal market base.

I'm pretty sure NK is flying to MYR from BWI, I know it's not DCA but they have kept the DC Area, well sorta. I am basing this upon the fact that BWI flights come up when you use the WAS city code.

They weren't last time I checked. Maybe things have changed though. Its not like a makes a big difference. I also would have bet it could do more than a weekly a319. Maybe 3x weekly?

It's done by traffic flow.

For instance, my closest airport -- distance-wise -- is DCA. But unless I have a 5am flight, I'm gridlocked out of it. Here outside the Washington Beltway, BWI and IAD are both 45 minutes away. So whichever has the best price for the trip I'm taking gets me in their parking lot.

While NK is out of DCA after September 6, they will not fly BWI-MYR. MYR isn't even an available destination from BWI.

Southwest has really added quite a lot in St. Louis lately. STL-EWR hasn't been around long, and STL-SAT and LGA start August 12th.

Flight schedule:

DCA-STL
1230-1345
1840-1950
STL-DCA
0855-11:50
1515-1810

These flight times will allow for quite a bit of connectivity even though they aren't the greatest for biz traveling. Every WN station in California, along with PDX and SEA will be reachable to DCA through either AUS or STL. Looks like GEG, BOI, RNO, and SLC are the unlucky stations (SLC-STL recently ended IIRC).

I was trying to figure out if the DCA STL flights will termiante in STL or continue on. Treid to see by booking but it appears they terminate in St. Louis. I g figure that having one stop service from DCA to a western desintiation would make sense but don't see it-can anyone correct me?

These flights are being added late in the game, so I imagine they made them terminators to avoid having to modify other existing route numbers. I would imagine we'll see the STL-DCA-STL flights integrated into one-stops to western cities (or maybe MDW) in future schedule releases.

I based my comment on NK's published route map online, I fully admit I did not go and see if there were flights in the schedules to match, amatuer mistake, (my A.net tinfoil hat is being held in shame) I"assumed" since BWI was added to by NK leaving DCA, that the map had been updated recently, and was more or less accurate, heck the routes they announced for next spring and summer show on their route map. Sorry!

SEA does have a STL flight, not sure if it connects to the DCA flight, but SEA has two DCA non-stops a day , IIRC PDX has only an MCI flight on WN, but that's ok, we have a single non-stop to DCA on our hometown airline AS. Places like GEG, BOI and GEG have lost several WN daily departures lately and would require at least 2 stops to get to DCA with WN, when people could just make one connection with AS, DL or UA. AUS is a long way to go enroute to DCA, and IIRC, WN's PDX-AUS flight is only seasonal, I wish AS would consider a daily PDX-AUS flight.

Right now the best connection cities for this flight - Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Little Rock, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Houston at one flight each.

To DCA times out to connect from Omaha on both flights, only one on the return.

Both flights in each direction time to connections to Kansas City.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

If NK can make ACY-MYR work, I think that it could make BWI-MYR work too. But, it seems that it wants to fly high profile routes like BWI-DFW. Although the latter could be more to build up DFW with as many destinations more than building up BWI at the moment.
