When Did Lufthansa Start SYD?

Sat Aug 04, 2012 10:13 am

Does anybody have a date for when Lufthansa started services to Sydney?

And was it originally with a 707-430 or 707-330B aircraft?

4th and 5th lines in this book excerpt:

And looks like LH published a 15 page book(let) on the 25th anniversary of Australia service.

In the LH timetable dated July 1966, a little over a year after service started in April 1965, the routing had changed to FRA-ATH-KHI-DEL-BKK-SIN-SYD.

Eastbound LH690, 707 once a week (Tuesday ex FRA). Elapsed time FRA-SYD 28 hrs. 20 min.

Westbound LH691 (Thursday ex SYD, same routing as eastbound). Elapsed time SYD-FRA 28 hrs.

No 5th freedom rights then between BKK and SIN.

my quick reference source is "As time flies" The history of LH, published at zthe 50th anniversary of the new LH in 2005.

Interesting point, my first trip to the Far East in 1980 was on LH FRA-ATH-KHI-BKK, the exact routing of the SYD service ( I continued a couple of days later to SIN) , that servoice was flown by D10.

So were the Flight Engineers on these routes also A&Ps? I can imagine that a mechanical along the way would be a challenge. Not that the stations on route would not have mechanics, but having your own to oversee the work and sign off on the paperwork etc. I can imagine would be a big help. Did they do anything special on these long international "milk runs' to handle MX problems?
...are we there yet?

Not sure specifically about LH but most flight engineers on the Kangaroo Route were from countries where ALL flight engineers were the local equivalent of A&Ps. Those from Australia, UK, Netherlands, India, Pakistan, Malaysia and Singapore certainly were, not sure about France, Germany & Japan.

I can imagine even (significantly) longer. I flew LH FRA-BKK-SYD in 1990, and the F/A then told me it was a 2-week trip for them. The two legs above, then the add-on to MEL on a separate day, then they dead-headed to DPS, and flew back from there (not sure if that was standard though, or if they flew back MEL-SYD-BKK-FRA as standard)...

Cheers

For most of the time (at least when the 747 flew it), it was a 21-day trip for the crew. Any older flight attendant with LH will happily tell you about it....
