Houston Hobby And New Airline

Sat Aug 04, 2012 5:33 pm

Does anyone think Houston Hobby could see a new airline serving the airport anytime soon?

Once you see FIS at the new International Concourse you can bet on at least one or two.

With the departure of Frontier heading back to IAH and Spirit recently announcing service into IAH as well, I doubt we'll see a new airline start up services at Hobby for awhile.

How many spare gates does HOU have? And, for that matter, IAH?

Cheers!

Who is left?

The only real option I could think of at the moment would be Virgin America.
No other airlines are left until the FIS comes it seems.

There is strong rumors in another thread of Volaris to Mexico City (2x daily), Monterrey on VivaAerobus (1x daily) and Toluca on Interjet (1x daily).

WN To More Mexico? (by aviacsa55 Jul 29 2012 in Civil Aviation)

WN seems to be doing well in HOU. Routes like ECP, CHS, GSP, EWR, have been added in recent years. HOU-SNA is announced but not operating yet. FL also had a decent presence in HOU and will integrate nicely into the WN operation there (HOU-ATL is running with both WN and FL equipment currently).

I could see Volaris because of their WN partnership. Interjet service was announced to IAH a few years ago but I guess that got cancelled. ViviaAerobus I could see moving to Hobby when the FIS opens.

Domestic wise, all I can see is more Jetblue routes coming and possibly DL. NK is going to fly to IAH soon and their recent strategy seems to be starting service at main airports and just spread from there like wildfire. I've heard on this website that if VX is to fly to Houston that it would be at IAH. UA should do like they do in AUS, SAT and RDU as in fly to CUN from HOU to combat WN since they did that with DL in the aforementioned cities. If UA were brilliant, they would have Copa do their dirty work for them and have them do PTY-HOU with that CUTE gate.

How about FI to KEF once FIS arrives?

FI recently started with DEN, and FI advertised as how alike both KEF-DEN areas are to attract pax.

With HOU, FI can advertise how unalike both areas are to attract pax?

At any rate, I think that the DEN-KEF flights are going to survive on those low-fare pax and if there are enough of those pax going DEN-Europe. It could be the same with HOU, my only concern would be if their 757 can handle the extra 300 miles or so longer distance to HOU than it is DEN-KEF?

So with the above, I nominate FI if their plane can make the journey. It would be a good match.....

Other than VX which I mentioned above, though others have said they would choose IAH, what is that new startup out of the San Diego area? Maybe them one day.
Seriously, there are no airlines left without needing the FIS? Who am I missing (HA won't...) in the lower 48?
I guess a Westjet from a preclearance airport could be a fantasy route but IAH is still more likely.

California Pacific EMB's won't have the range with the CLD runway length.

3568 to DEN, 3881 to HOU, right now FI's longest route is KEF-SEA at 3622 miles, I'm guessing there wouldn't be enough support to keep a FI Texas flight operating. When FI flew to SFO 4204 miles required a 767, the 757 didn't have the range.

I think (hope) point2point was joking lol. Even if there was a market to support Houston to KEF...a fully loaded 757 going that distance...from HOU...not sure if it could get off the ground in time.

Yea, I live under the 12R approach, albeit 7-10miles out.
