2012 NFL Charters

Sat Aug 04, 2012 8:01 pm

Football season is here again and the first charter (Delta) is in the air!

The Hall of Fame game is in Canton, OH tomorrow night.

Arizona Cardinals - DL B752
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/D...0/history/20120804/1830Z/KPHX/KCAK

New Orleans Saints - UA B764
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/U...6/history/20120804/1945Z/KMSY/KCAK

The Saints will then travel to PVD to work out with the Patriots before they play a preseason game against each other next weekend.

Will they be flying the UA 764 into PVD? I wonder if we will see more of these in PVS this year. So far, I've seen a UA 764, 753, and PMUA 763 go into PVD for the Jets games.

Looks like the are deadheading the 764 back to IAH so will send something else in tomorrow night or Monday to go to PVD. With the larger preseason roster and the equipment needed for the week long stay in New England, I would guess it would be another 764.

Broncos and 49ers look like a sure bet, Jets, Colts and Texans possible.

By the way, for all you out there reading this saying the 764 would have to tough time at PVD, when the CO 764 took off from PVD once when I saw it, it only took about 4000' of runway on takeoff. Granted it was not close to full, but still.

Indeed...there was a time when Air Luxor would fly the A330-300 PVD-LIS

PVD is fairly capable of most anything, weight being the factor probably

WO is down to 3 MD-11 pax a/c so I doubt one would be available, plus after the issues with the Jax Jaguars a few years back and you have DL and UA offering the different classes, unlikely.

The Broncos are taking a CO 767-400 to Chicago to play the bears.

The positioning flight is running as a revenue flight IAH-DEN at 0800 wednesday morning.

That always has been a factor, sadly. Even when the Concorde visited in 1989 they had to fly it to JFK and then go back to England because they would not be able to take off from PVD fully fueled. SATA also flew a weekly flight from Ponta Delgada in the summer in 2008(?).

The Packers usually take a 330 or even 747 when they go out to SAN
but tomorrow will "only" be a 767-300.

Bills are on UA, they left DL after the 2008 season and went to CO.
Last year they flew the 753, 764 and 772.

I think you are correct. I do vaguely recall them doing a season or two of Portugal flying out of PVD. Shame it didn't last...which to anyone who is from the area would think was a no-brainer. But for a variety of reasons...didn't last beyond that.

Maybe the Rams & Patriots will get DL 777s for the London game, but I would imagine 764s since that's what DL uses to LHR most often. I think the NFL springs for these flights in exchange for the teams agreeing to do the game. Also, this is one game where neither team wants to be labeled the 'Home' team since they have to give up one of their dates to do so. But I also believe that team (this year, St. Louis) will get most of the revenue.

I think teams in the past going to London have chartered Virgin 747s. I believe that for the London game the responsibilities for making arrangements go to the NFL rather than the team like regular games.

Wonder if HA is also doing the Seahawks again. Last year HA must have had only one 763 available for charter and DL covered some trips when both teams were on the road the same weekend, that will happen again three times this season, Sep 30, Oct 28 and Nov 25.

Here's DL flying the Raiders last year,

I hope it's not too far off topic, but how much do they pay for each charter or perhaps the airline gets some Advertising in return?? Not that the teams are in financial issues or cannot pay the charters, I just find it impressive on how much it must cost them to do so....

The games are know quite a ways out. They are bid and built into the lines like any other revenue/ferry/charter flight. The F/As however are specially trained and there's an interview process.

Here's an article about Delta and says the typical sports teams spends between 1 and 3 million per season.

One of the DL pilots (FO) who posts here said the Captain seat was part of the bid on a trip he did, but he caught the right seat off reserve, that was an NBA 319 trip, don't know if NFL works the same way.

Depends on the carrier but if it is known in enough time to be part of a monthly bid package, it should be available for monthly bidding and awarded as part of a monthly line award to a bidding pilot just like any other regular trip. If it's a short notice it will likely end up in open time where it will either get picked up by a lineholder, traded into by a lineholder (trades a trip on his line for the uncovered charter trip), or assigned to a reserve.

As with any other trip it can always end up in open time from someones line if they call in sick or go illegal for the trip (30 in 7 conflict, lose a qual, etc).

So ready for Football season!! Mixing aviation and football, well, I don't think there could be anything better. Just a quick question. How do they decide who gets the "good seats" on those aircraft? I'm assuming the top coaches get first...then who? Top paid? Chosen by lottery? Just curious.

Cheers!

I know the Bengals and Bears have and think the Cowboys did a while back.

Might be limited to a 752 as that what was used above.

How do they decide who gets the "good seats" on those aircraft? I'm assuming the top coaches get first...then who? Top paid? Chosen by lottery? Just curious.

I remember reading about some player complaining that the Head Coach would sit in F with the owners instead of in coach with the staff.

Also this article describes the best player on the team sitting in the left window seat of the first row, so there is probably an informal pecking order on teams where coaches or management don't assign seats. The interesting thing about this article is about the superstition that developed around that row of seats.

I hope it's not too far off topic, but how much do they pay for each charter or perhaps the airline gets some Advertising in return?? Not that the teams are in financial issues or cannot pay the charters, I just find it impressive on how much it must cost them to do so....

in the late 1970s, UA used to advertise they carried 26 of the 28 NFL teams. Dallas flew Braniff, and the hometown Bears (who weren't ast popular back then) flew Northwest Orient.
135 hrs PIC (mostly PA-28) - not current. Landings at MDW, PIA, JAN.
