Bremen Airport Closed- Aug 6-13, 2012

Mon Aug 06, 2012 7:21 pm

Looks like it's because of runway work. Any insight as to what happened or is it just maintenance?

See the airport's website (2nd paragraph).

They closed their only runway, in the middle of the peak holiday season, for scheduled maintenance?? Are they insane?

The runway is being re-asphalted and new lights installed. Closing the airport for a week is certainly a big inconvenience, but every now and then this has to be done, and there's no way around it.

Seems to be the year for runway maintenance in northern Germany - just a month or two ago HAM also closed its runways for maintenance, though by having two of them, the airport could remain open by using the other. Made for some unusual (and very nice) approaches over the harbor and city.

Some additional info if you can read German:

Business traffic is currently at a low due to the holiday season, and the asphalt needs to certain temperature (at best above 20° C) to harden fastest possible. Only chance to do this is in the summer time in Northern Germany.

For the tour operators it is less of a hassle as the typical travel contract for all-in-tourists allows a switch of flights / airports for certain reasons.

And e.g. HAJ/FMO/HAM are not too far away ...
I suspect most flights will be switched to HAJ - and where not possible passengers will be rebooked to existing routes (probably with larger equipment if neccessary).
I miss the sound of rolls royce darts and speys
