New/unusual DL A/c Route Pairings This Winter

Tue Aug 07, 2012 12:19 am

Noticing lots of aircraft changes "optimization" for the upcoming winter schedule. Great to see DL maximizing flexibility!

Browsing the electronic schedule, I've found:

333 JFKAMS
332 AtlFCO
332 AtlLIM!!!
332 AtlEZE
772 DTWAMS
764 JFKCDG
333 DTWCDG

332s are completely out of the Pacific
772s are completely out of ATL, NRT
77Ls are completely out of DTW

764s seem to be maximizing utilization, 763ERs...not so much

Honestly, I'm not sure it would make sense for DL to fully utilize the 763s... the economy is down now. They were maxing them out somewhat recently IIRC but drew back since Europe is in the dumps
Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

Not to mention that with reduced flying this winter, there is a great opportunity to get the rest of the non-lie flat fleet up to that configuration. With the 747s finishing up this fall, that could leave only the A330s to have non-lie flats in Summer 2013.

This shows the benefits of having flexibility in capacity and also the ratio of J/Y aircraft.

The 77E on DTW-AMS I think partially due to aircraft routings. If you look at the timing of the arrivals of the flights from ICN and PVG, its matchs well with sending the same aircraft out on the 10pm DTW-AMS flight.

The A333 on DTW-CDG is new, as DL is now flying a second flight, in addition to the AF A340 on DTW-CDG. Initially this was to be summer seasonal, but with the reductions in secondary TATL flying over the winter, DL is keeping some of the additional capacity in CDG for the winter. AF operates 5x weekly DTW-CDG on an A340 and DL will operate 5x weekly on DTW-CDG with an A333 (Wed, Thur, & Sun are the only days that both the AF & DL flights operate)

DL doesn't need the 77L in DTW, since DTW-HKG is ending

LAX-HND is still being flown with and A332, the only 332 across the Pacific

764 utilization is alway high

763 utilization will drop since mods will accelerate through the winter months.

Is a 77L required on DTW-HKG?

UAL operates EWR-HKG with a 77E with a distance about 200 miles longer than DTW-HKG. Granted it is sometimes weight restricted but 200 less miles would mean at least 3,000 less pounds of fuel.

It surprises me that DL has about 4 transpacific 767 routes and have moved the A332 s which have more range to shorter routes. I guess the 767 works on 12 hour routes for them. I guess it is all about capacity management.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

It will operate an ATL-LAX segment to get routed back to the rest of the network.

Hopefully to bring the 763s into the 21st century...

Great news! Needed to happen a long time ago. Unfortunately for me, PDX-AMS is downgraded and downgauged back to a 763 this winter (in the past it's been an A332).

The 77E does operate DTW-HKG from time to time...

IIRC, the timeline for the 767 mods is still end of 2013 completion, so they better have a whole chunk of the fleet out for the mods this fall and winter...they still have 50 planes to do!

They have more if you include the HNL-Japan flights (NRT, NGO, FUK)

I was uunder the impression that DL was ending JFK-CDG, now it's being upgraded? Or is this jsut until the 763 mods are done. Also, wasn't JFK-LHR supposed to get 1x 763?

None of the routes flown by 763s are really pushing the 763's limits, so the extra range of the 332 isn't really a factor, and the airline can decide the best aircraft for the route based on capacity and operational factors.

332 AtlLIM!!!

I fly DL on that route a lot. For most of the past few years, they used a 767-400ER. Demand is high during northern winter/southern summer for Christmas and summer vacation down there. They actually ran a 777 on that route for several months ~Nov-Feb 2009/2010.

John

Do you see this scheduled? I can only find 757s, 763As and the lone 77L on ATL-LAX. It would seem they would need at least a weekly ATL rotation...

Actually, I was wrong....

They are rotating the A332 for LAX-HND in via DTW-LAX.

The 8:35am DTW-LAX flight will operate with an A332 on Mon, Tue, Fri instead of a 763A
The 11:20pm LAX-DTW redeye flight will operate with an A332 on Mon, Thu, and Sun, instead of a 763A
