Who Still Flies MD-87s?

Wed Aug 08, 2012 9:51 am

Hard to believe, but I couldn't find any topic handling this...
With SAS taking them out of fleet, Spanair and City airline bust and the Chad Government one a wee bit hard to get on for a simple flight - are there any airlines out there still flying the MD-87? I was trying to get one for my log, but it seems they have all disappeared from Europe and even most parts of the rest of the world . or am I just not looking hard enough?

A quick search in a.net's database shows some examples (I didn't complete it):

Is your question limited to operators in Europe? There are several VVIP MD 87s out there.

Not necessarily. Of course that would make it easier to catch one (apart from availability), but basically I'm open for all possibilities. I just find it incredibly hard to find them. With an EIS in 1987, I suspected more to be around...

You can contact DAT Ops, they are very helpful people and published their scheudule to me when they were operating scheduled services. When I enquired in 2011 they were operating for Blue1. Earlier this year their aircraft operated in Africa and Central Asia, so no scheduled European Services.

If you can't find their email address, just PM me and I can forward it to you.

Loran

Have SK totally stopped using theirs? I know they used them on the ATH-CPH route and managed to get SE-DIP back in December .

I'm glad I caught an MD87 last year on Spanair which was very easy and cheap too. The schedule told me months in advance which route it was on (I know, not a guarantee but it turned out correct in the end), it was BCN-MAD which is a cheap route. I paid 40 EUR all in.
I knew last year that getting an MD87 was rather easy at that point but incredibly hard or impossible at a later point, so I went for it. Kind of like the MD11 today.

SK are still operating at least one (OY-KHU has been operating today on CPH-BCN-CPH - 8 Aug 12), however this may well be the last one in operation at SK.
Swiftair of Spain have at least one in operation.
One time in South Africa? I think they have some.

That was exactly my plan last year. I even picked a flight which apparently was a one-off on the MD87 - just to learn during boarding that the aircraft was swapped with the flight some 40 minutes earlier which was supposed to be an MD83. Still a new type for me then, but still...

There are at least 2 being converted to water bombers to fight forest fires. It seems most AY MD-87 purchases lately have been just for engines and spare parts.

I did some research in our schedule data some weeks ago and it seems like my research still holds and the last scheduled flight is on September 1 (not a nice birthday present for me  ): http://www.ch-aviation.ch/portal/new...st-md-87-oy-khu-by-early-september

There is also Air Uganda with one example. It used to be on the EBB-NBO route but now seems to be used primarly on EBB-JUB which is not so easy in terms of visas! The MD-87 is very much missing from my flown list too.

Since when? I'm not questioning you, but I flew on a 87 from FAT-LAS back in January and I beleive it was only in service for like 5 months with a brand new interior. Really nice. I believed they acquired it from SAS.

Allegiant MD-87s are based in Orlando, not in Vegas. Last one that i saw (took picture of on arrival to IAD) was 2 weeks ago.

Gee, I was very lucky to have my MD-82 changed for a MD-87 a month ago flying out of MUC.
It was OY-KHU then, with the Denmark Euro titles.

Allegiant mentioned 2 MD-87s in their fleet and are to retire them next year per a recent management presemtation:

The MD-87s in their fleet over the last several years were primarily used for their casino junket contracts with Caesars Entertainment (formerly Harrah's Entertainment).

2 of my SAS CRJ-900 flights changed to MD87 earlier this year, on CPH-AAL and CPH-AMS. Lucky me, I guess.

G4 also based two MD-87s at IWA back in 2007 when they first started scheduled service there, I flew on N948MA out of Gateway after they started. It wasn't long before MD-83s replaced them. They have been used as charter planes for the most part though.

Yes. G4 has 3. N945MA based in IFP and N948MA based in UTM, both contracted to fly Caesar's Entertainment charters and both will be retired at the end of the year when the contract runs out.

The third is N952MA was retired long ago, is in IGM being parted out.
