ANZ To Move To Tom Bradley Terminal At LAX

Wed Aug 08, 2012 10:45 am

Air New Zealand has been selected to design and manage the new Star Alliance lounge at the all new Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX. This means that the airline will move to TBIT from Terminal 2 starting in May of 2013. Good news for ANZ and as a passenger I would much prefer to fly out of the new TBIT then the old Terminal 2.

Cheers,

Terminal 2 has worked well for ANZ, expecially with connections from Air Canada which uses the same terminal. The TBIT is served by several Star alliance arlines but many of those are Asian based airline which will provide next to zero connections to ANZ at LAX, they connect with ANZ in Asia. The three airlines providing connections to ANZ at LAX are United, LH and Air Canada. OF those only LH uses the TBIT.

I don't know if you have even to LAX, but Terminal 2 is not that good compared to what the new TBIT is going to be like. However, you do have a point, AC probably has more people connecting to ANZ than LH.

As a London-based flyer who uses NZ 1/2 to LAX, I welcome this change. Terminal 2 US Customs has taken up to 2 hours due to the volume of passengers arriving at the same time. It makes LHR look easy!

Some comments from NZ regarding the new lounge can be found here -- http://www.ausbt.com.au/new-star-all...-lounge-at-lax-to-open-in-may-2013

Good news IMO.

You are very right about LAX making LHR look slick and easy - but recent experience of the TBIT suggests that 2 hours queues for immigration and customs are normal there too. Hopefully the rebuild of the TBIT will speed this up, but I am not optimistic that this will be the case.
Recently my solution has been to clear immigration elsewhere (e.g. YYZ) and arrive in LA as a domestic pax.

It's so interesting that you say that. On my last trip to LA, I did exactly that (AC LHR-YYZ-LAX) and loved it! US Customs took 5 minutes as opposed to 2 hours. But that really says something about LAX when people prefer connecting somewhere else over flying there non-stop because the Customs queues are so long. I really hope that they get this sorted out with the new TBIT, but like you said, it's probably not likely. Although, my experience arriving at TBIT has usually been noticeably quicker than Terminal 2. I wonder if anyone is going to take NZ's place at Terminal 2.

That's my preferred routing. It is also has benefits on the return: You can do a full day's work in Socal, have dinner with your colleagues and then catch a late night red-eye to YYZ* connecting to the day time flight to LHR. Get into LHR around 9pm, go home and go straight to bed. It's about the only way I don't get jetlag when travelling SoCal to the UK.

*using BOS and JFK can also work but they are less good on the way out

I don't see this as an issue. You still have to go through security again, just with a longer walk. Even going through customs and immigration on UA at LAX, the walk to a connecting UA flight can be a good distance with all the winding corridors and different terminals.

All persons who are eligible for a NEXUS card should have one. It makes transit at US and Canadian border points and airports so quick.
If you are like me, the color of my eyes does not permit an iris scan so I must go through the line that handles the crew. That is usually pretty quick.

Just a suggestion for next time any of you come to LAX and looking to minimize immigration time, perhaps select a US based carrier. I always fly to UK on either BA or VS from LAX and often I'm very out numbered by non AMericans-so at LHR I don't have to go in same line as the Europeans and vice versa on the return. I would suspect the US carriers are more US citizen heavy and therefore the non US citizen lines at LAX maybe shorter....now w/ a caveat to all this, I personally wouldn't be caught dead on a US carrier to Europe and alas could see why many of you would not go for this option either, but again flying VS or BA its served me well when it came to immigration (NEVER 2 hours but I could see it was going to be for my fellow European pax).

Bradley International Terminal at LAX

Is this where Air Tahiti Nui has flown from in the last few years ? I think I remember I had to go to a different terminal from an Air New Zealand flight to an Air Tahiti Nui flight back in 2010. I am pretty sure it was Bradley International Terminal ...

Good question. So that will leave Virgin Atlantic, TACA, Volaris and Hawaiian. There will definitely be some extra capacity there if someone wants to move in. Might be a good fit for Virgin Australia then they would be right next door to Virgin America flights.

With the caveat that VA arrives into the Delta terminal because T3 does not have immigration and customs (I understand). There are rumours circulating but none substantiated that Virgin will build a lounge at T2 or T3, which might indicate all Virgin international flights arriving into T3 and possibly departing from T2. It would be good to have that alignment for transfers etc.

would it not be the other way around, arrive in T2 (customs and Immigration) and depart from T3, VX,VS?

I once arrived at LAX with gifts for friends a couple of which turned out to fall into the category of agricultural products. We had to go through a separate channel, had our goodies confiscated and were out of the airport in no time. For the loss of maybe £5 worth of stuff it was a great way to jump the horrendous queue.

Virgin Australia is 25% owned by Air New Zealand, with that interest growing in the years to come I can see them moving to TBIT along with NZ.

If Virgin Aus keep their current arrangment with DL on North American routes I can't see them moving to TBIT.

That really depends on how the relationship develops. If the current situation continues, then VA is far better off staying put -- there is no real advantage to them moving to TBIT simply because NZ is there.
