A Lot Of Diverstions To BGR Today?

Fri Aug 10, 2012 6:06 pm

Seems like quite a few diversions to BGR today. Most of the flights were headed to EWR. Is it weather or some issue at EWR?

EWR is really backed up and keeps going in and out of ground stops. It is more than just BGR. Diversions all over the east coast. SWF got a few European arrivals.

Last count I see that Bangor got two United 777s, several 757s, and one SAS A333.

Bangor is often to the NY/NJ area what Milwaukee is to O'Hare when Thunderstorms roll through.

It's due to thunderstorms. The three NYC airports are reporting average inbound delays of about 3 hours.

BOS is going to get hit by the same weather system in a couple of hours. The area is supposed to get downpours of 1 - 3" per hour hour.

It looks like most the diversions are on their way to EWR. There were flights diverting to BGR, BUF, SWF, ALB, PHL, BWI, IAD & BOS. Probably others too.

As is this: http://www.wunderground.com/wunderma...17324829&zoom=8&pin=Newark%2c%20NJ

There was a cold front working it's way down today which kicked up the storms.

The small system that moved through yesterday was quite the violent one which deluged the area and caused localized flooding, and it has now been confirmed that tornado touched down on Long Island and made its way through Great River, Oakdale, Bohemia and Ronkonkoma. That is the basic area where ISP is located which is 35-40 miles east of JFK.

I received a total of 5 emergency weather warning texts on my smart phone while I was at work and I'll admit, I didn't pay much attention to them before, but now I will!!

I was working at ISP when three funnels passed directly over my office...(upstairs in the large hangar) and 4 miles south, down the road, two homes were damaged where the funnels made ground contact. The roof of my office which is actually the hangar roof was vibrating w/ pulses of air pressure...Two vortexes passed over. The third I caught on video, only out the hangar door bay. You can see the rain/wind gust change direction 360 degrees counter clockwise in 10 seconds. Our customers computer showed the vortices traveling north right up Johnson Avenue, next to the hangar.
The large low in Michigan sent in a pulse off the ocean that developed into a small but intense low. On "Wunderground" you could actually view the rotation that spanned the width of Long Island. This spin spun several vortexes with one confirmed tornado. Tonight the low should pass north with another round of airport snarling T storms arriving here. The tornado was a wimpy F-0 yet the sound of the vortex passing overhead was obvious and very strange...sounded like 12 Huey's thumping the air overhead.

My friend who works on Fire Island just posted this pic of the water spouts too over Great South Bay:

I'm not surprised by this image...it was raining so hard to actually see the funnels was next to impossible from my vantage point but you could hear them. You could also feel the ambient air pressure pulsing...the women in my work place were freaking out...they were really spun because the hangar had no basement.    ...I told them to just pick a Gulfstream, any Gulfstream and strap yourself in...g

Anyway you can post or send me the video? I find it ironic that I move to Oklahoma and they have a below average tornado season and then my hometown (Oakdale) gets hit by one.
