Southwest Starts DAY-DEN CAK-DEN/MDW Tomorrow 8/12

Sat Aug 11, 2012 8:42 pm

Southwest metal will officially be scheduled into Dayton and Akron-Canton starting tomorrow, joining FL metal in both cities, and on both routes out of Denver.

New WN flights:
DAY-DEN:
Flight# 4025 1610-1715

DEN-DAY:
Flight# 4022 1100-1535

CAK-DEN:
Flight# 4016 1125-1245

DEN-CAK:
Flight# 4012 1320-1810

CAK-MDW:
Flight# 4125 0725-0745
Flight# 4018 1845-1905

MDW-CAK:
Flight# 4010 0840-1050
Flight# 4014 1940-2150

SWA 8725 flew into CAK today for celebration and the inaugural event tomorrow:

SWA 4022 will be the first flight into DAY from DEN Sunday morning:

FL has quite the presence in both cities - out of CAK they fly to MCO, ATL, BOS, MKE, TPA, DEN, and LGA. Out of DAY they fly to ATL, BWI, MCO, TPA, and DEN. I believe both cities still have seasonal RSW service as well.

Will we see WN hold on to routes like CAK-MKE and seasonal RSW service? Also, is WN using their own staffing in DAY and CAK? It would make much more sense to have FL staffing handle as much as possible considering the minimal schedule, at least so far.

How is it being handled in DCA? At the moment it's a 1 per day station which is probably the smallest WN station ever (obviously I'm not counting WN dba FL at DCA).

CAK-MKE ends with the start of CAK-MDW. The route was killed with the announcement of MDW service. Time will tell with RSW. Its a snowbird shuttle, depends if WN wants to keep it around.

I know some of the CAK FL staff "transferred" to WN in order to work these flights. WN union contracts would not allow current FL employees to work the flights, so there are two operations side by side in CAK. Not very cost effective at all.

Wouldn't using FL workers fall into that provision that allows contract work for less than x number of flights? Does that even count as contract labor considering that FL is wholly owned by WN anyway?

I was in CMH about two weeks ago flying WN and FL uniformed employees were doing... something at my gate. I didn't care enough to figure it out but the fact that they were FL personnel didn't seem to be a problem.

I think thats a proposal that hasn't been approved yet.

If they are not paying dues to the union, it doesn't matter.

I don't know the details, but I know CAK FL employees who now have WN employee ID's to work these flights.

Kinda curious that WN is only doing one route from DAY. Wondering why they won't open up STL, HOU, MDW or BNA from DAY...to complement the FL service to MCO, BWI and ATL.

Good question that I don't know the answer to. STL-DCA (2x) at least has been announced but stil make it a very small station.

IIRC DSM is losing MKE at the same time as WN starts DSM-MDW twice daily, so that makes sense. Thanks for the correction.

I'm guessing just to get it up and running as a station in the system, but definitely different from how they operated before the FL merger. DAY-MDW is only 226 miles - pretty short and something they have shyed away from as of lately.

It has been in the contract for at least 8 years. So they could contract out the city if they choose to do so.

They will be competing directly with F9 on the DEN-DAY route. Frontier started this route a couple of years ago using a CRJ or EMB (cant remember which) and they built it into a route that needs an A-319. They did a great job building the route. I believe UA also has this route running a CRJ right now.

I am hopeful that FL's entry into this market some months ago (now converting to WN) helped jump start the route for them.

DCA is currently being handled by WN CSA and OPS but the ramp is being handled by the contractor that handled FL which is FSS. DCA will continue to be handled by FSS on the ramp until WN takes over fully.

Thanks! I was thinking there were a few routes as well but couldn't recall what ones.

This is a nice boost to LGA departures on SWA:

BWI 3x
MDW 5x
DEN 2x
MKE 2x
STL 2x

Total of 14 daily (week days).

Could be the same in the new stations too, I wonder.

I hope so as well. Three airlines is quite a lot to support.

F9 also started the CAK-DEN route back in c. 2005, and have maintained it at 2x or even 3x A319, and when I flew it last month, it was on a A320, and packed solid, too. The CAK-DEN route is definately going to get a lot of attention now.
