Lansing (LAN) To Announce New Carrier Tues, Aug14?

Mon Aug 13, 2012 2:39 pm

Lansing Capitol Airport (LAN) in Michigan will announce a new carrier Aug14 at 10 am according to a press announcement. The Mayor and assorted gov't "royalty" will be on hand. Any ideas who? I'm assuming it is G4, but that is pure speculation. it could be F9, but there is much more money available for them to go to TOL, so that seems unlikely. B6, WN, and VX all seem unlikely. Could be a Canadian carrier, but seems unlikely with Windsor nearby.

It will be Allegiant... I'd imagine to SFB.

Didn't G4 use to run from LAN to SFB?

It could be G4 returning (after a ~3/4 year hiatus), but my money is on NK.

I may be wrong on it being Allegiant, but I believe they are opening up some new cities in the Great Lakes shortly, i.e. in the next few weeks.

That would be odd given their presence 40 miles away...

Yes before moving their operation to GRR.

Doubtful G4 would return to LAN with GRR only 60 miles down the road. My guess is LAN will get some sort of seasonal scheduled charter to Florida similar to the old Direct Air operation other cities had. Vision Air is one that comes to mind.

I wonder if it is F9. They seem to be thinking outside the box a bit lately; and the news article says "new," which to me discounts G4 as they have been in Lansing before.

I do wonder if it might be something like Eagle to New York. Outside of DC, NYC is one of the top destinations requested.

Will be fun to see

I hope not, LAN has not had good luck with such operations. AirAzul and JetAmerica are the two that come to mind. I doubt that if it was such an operation, that the mayor of the city of Lansing would attend.

I can see it being Frontier.
Sun Country is flying in the winter months, on Saturdays nonstop to Orlando with a few other scattered dates here and there.
Frontier announcing Sun/Thu or Mon/Fri service wouldn't be surprise me.

They also fly daily to Washington, D.C. and MSP.

My wild, out of left field guess would maybe be B6. It will probably never happen, but they would probably do fairly well with airfare prices and stimulate demand to the East Coast. One can always hope.

I'd think they'd do TOL and collect the $3 million or so in incentives. LAN would only offer a fraction of that.

When is the last time they added a station with the population/traffic size of LAN in the USA? Never?

Could be. I believe the CEO has told the staff to look for "more service announcements" later this week.

I'm hoping for off-the-wall stuff - I'd love to see Frontier pick up JetBlue's dropped BTV-MCO - but LAN is possible, I guess.

You are correct, which is why I don't think it will be; but B6 doesn't have much presence in the midwest outside of ORD, and there would be no direct competitors with LAN-NYC.

I think the more realistic would be F9

If they enter LAN I'm hoping it is to MCO. That's the smarter choice.

IF it is Frontier, I assumed it would be MCO even with Sun Country on the route. LAN-DEN is possible, I suppose, but it didn't jump to my mind with GRR just down the road. I dunno. Maybe that would work - it isn't a long drive.

Frontier is giving no alert about this on its Facebook page, so I guess it could as easily be Allegiant or Spirit. Or Vision Air.

My bet is F9. They seem to be seeking out every subsidy and tour operator who will profitably employ their services.

A lot of 'em are doing it these days.

Delta's GSO-JFK is getting the same subsidy as Frontier's GSO-MCO and Southwest (Airtran) is doing a big bunch of work for Apple Vacations this winter - AUS, DTW, MKE, CMH, BWI, etc.

Based on the time of the year (August) of this announcement, it is almost certainly a carrier headed to Florida / Fun & Sun destination, with the announcement of new service starting this fall/winter.

Yes before moving their operation to GRR.

LAN was originally opened with service to LAS in summer of 2003, followed by SFB in May of 2005, just to add to the history of Allegiant in Michigan. It was one of their longest routes at the time IIRC.

SInce RST also is having an announcement at 10am tomorrow, it's either:

G4 returning to both airports
F9 announcing RST & LAN (more likely IMO).

Yeah, I just saw the RST announcement thread, so I think you may be on to something.

If its F9, I really wonder how they are going to make it work in the dead months out of the year.
If they do a RST & LAN, my guess is both are less-than-daily.

I was actually looking at some data from the airport, and it seemed like it was in the mid-high 70's to DCA at least. I think MSP would have higher LF if it offered better connections to the West Coast. I was looking at SEA the other day, and while it offers so-so connects to SEA, it only offered connections back to LAN like twice a week.

I don't think it will be G4. They usually make an annoucement via facebook to look for a new city, and allow people to guess; which I haven't seen yet.

If I had to guess, it will be F9 with 2-3 to DEN, and it might be the other 2-3 would be RST.

The other off chance would be NK, although they are at DTW, they could make 1-2 Florida routes work, most likely without hurting SY because the majority of SY's network out of LAN (minus DCA and MSP) work primarily through Apple Vacations.

I noticed that it is "routes" in the announcement, which makes me think it will be more than 1.

It won't be NK in LAN or RST. They have already announced numerous routes starting as late as next summer. On their earnings call, the VP of Marketing stated that they don't have much going into 2013 that hasn't already been announced.

Maybe Allegiant leaving Saginaw had something to do with...

GRR will be interesting to watch in the months ahead with Allegiant.

I'm surprised and wonder how this will affect G4 GRR-SFB service? For now, it looks like G4 will maintain 2x weekly SFB service from GRR, but I'm not seeing the ramp-up to 3x-5x flights per week during the winter holidays they've done in the past. During G4's peak at GRR a couple years ago, there were days they actually operated 2 SFB flights per day (seasonally) on certain days of the week.

I read an article a while back that said FL hurt G4's SFB loads once FL began operating MCO flights from GRR- perhaps this is more evidence of that.

Also, I'm not seeing MBS-SFB in G4's schedule currently through Jan-15. Was MBS service only late winter and spring last year, or is MBS a casualty caused by the move to LAN?

People are asking how this will impact GRR-SFB? Don't forget that WN is dropping service to Floridia from GRR so the overall impact is negligible.

Huh? FL has been running MCO and TPA this summer. Granted, there is a late summer / early fall hiatus, but GRR-MCO returns in October, TPA, and RSW return in November.

Allegiant Air's Return To Lansing Ups Competition, Might Lead To Lower Airfares

"Lum said it’s likely Allegiant returned because of the success of Sun Country, which flew more than 97,500 passengers in and out of Lansing in 2011. Analysts say Sun Country has helped turn around the fortunes of the airport, which in 2010 saw its fewest inbound and outbound passengers since 1982."
