SIA Announces New In-flight Cabin Products

Tue Aug 14, 2012 9:16 am

Singapore Airlines has appointed two world-renowned design firms - BMW Group subsidiary DesignworksUSA, and UK and Singapore-based James Park Associates (JPA) – to help develop the next generation of in-flight cabin products that will be introduced from the second half of next year.

(...)

Revamped seats and cabin interiors as well as the latest generation of in-flight entertainment offerings will be introduced progressively, starting on new Boeing 777-300ERs that will enter service from the latter half of next year. This will be followed by Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s, in addition to possible retrofits to aircraft already in service.

Just saw this on their Facebook page. Awesome! SQ already has what is arguably the best J-class seats in the world and fantastic F and Y products.

It's amazing to think the new J was introduced around 5 years ago already and yet it still remains a product above and beyond that of its competitors. Too bad KrisWorld has become a bit of a joke. I wish they would expand the movies and TV shows offerings.

Looking forward to it!

Cheers

Anyone know what type of timeframe we are talking about? Release with 787/A350, or much sooner with upcoming 777-300ER?

Can't wait, they really want to stay ahead, but hope they stay with true 1-2-1 config in J-class.

Edit: see they say latter half of 2013 it will hit their fleet (from Facebook). But wonder if they'll release mock-ups before then.

Its mentioned by RAGAZZO777 in the OP, and in the linked press release.

Unfortunately I have only flown SQ in Y, but, indeed, at least from a by-passer point of view, their J and F seats on the 77W looked very similar.

It's amazing that they will already start updating next year what just last month I considered a truly top-notch product in Y in both their 380s and 77Ws.

Thumbs-up to SQ looking to Americans for how to innovate its inflight products, continuing the airline's long tradition in this area.

To bad our own airlines won't do the same...

Yet Continental, errr UA, still has blue-checkered seats on their 787! Grrrrr...

The seats look similar, but First has wider seats and more pitch (so you don't need to sleep at an angle to fit if you're tall) and the LCD display is larger.

Choosing a couple of random dates in September a J class return from LHR to SIN is between £3,608 and £3,880 and F class return is £6,139 on a 773 and £6,719 on an A380. Is the little bit of extra comfort really worth a minimum of £2,250 - if you are paying full fare anyway.

For that hike in fares I would want rather more than a touch more comfort.

it should be like it was on the 747, where J was nothing like F.

Do you think they will introduce a premium economy product like (or even better than) CX?

This is misleading. They have not announced any new products. They barely announced the appointment of a design consultant to do the work.

I don't claim to be an expert, but I do believe that the products are close to being finalized, if this has not already been done, so the consultants should have been nominated a long time beforehand. I'd imagine plans would have to be finalized significantly in advance in the work-up to manufacturing, testing, certifying and fitting the products onboard aircraft to be delivered in 2H 2013.

I suppose it's customary for most airlines to release fluff pieces on their new products to garner the necessary interest and attention of the travelling public before official launches/reveals i.e. CX's press release on the then new Premium Economy product. - http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en/...89c0134310VgnVCM1000000ad21c39____

Perhaps they should introduce some ground services like how EK chauffeurs their premium customers at various airports!

How good/bad is CX new Premium Economy Class, seating wise?
I may have a chance coming up to take one to New York.
I sometimes wonder just how far/much would SIA want to take their capital expenditure further, in the name of being leading airliners? I hope SIA will continue to make money and stay competitive.
