Will it be with a 787? I know it was hinted in the past.

Really surprised why EK still hasn't joined the party

Maybe someone would again misinterpret this as QR joining oneworld ... just like EY

No, but I think with all the work the OneWorld carriers are putting in talking to the Gulf carriers that its logical that one could join.

Until UA could even make those IAD flights all nonstops instead of tag-ons (BAH / DOH), it's gonna be hard to imagine any other hub gaining Gulf flights

We've heard the EY rumor for how many years already ? QR used to have a big code-share with PMUA and even that didn't lead to anything larger.

My information is that talks are advanced to induct QR into OneWorld - its on.

Dunno about EY but certainly there is room in the alliance for both.

Very cool!

This will be popular for travelers headed to SE Asia.

Unfortunately, will make things more difficult for struggling AI and give EY a challenge.

So the new-DOH airport gets exercised?

Exciting news. I'm sad it isn't a 787 route.   IMHO, this would be an excellent 787 starter route...

IMHO, QR is the better choice for an alliance of the mid-east carriers. EK is an 800 pound gorilla, so why wants to help feed it? EY just doesn't yet have the network QR does with the potential connection times.

So why isn't EK on the route?

As the A380 wing crack issue is resolved, this could be an opportunity for EK... Not for an A380 to ORD. Not initially. But to free up a 77W or 77L.

AI does enough to make it difficult on themselves. I suspect EK will also join the market and that will "challenge" EY tremendously.

If the route is to be a 77W that seems like a lot of economy seats for the route. I wonder where QR will be sending their 787s if not on these NA routes.

How many more 77Ws do they have to take delivery of? Will this aircraft allocation be a new build or will it be due to a network shuffle?

QF ended their relationship with EY years ago, QF wasn't willing to give EY full access to its frequent flyer program. No VA and EY have a full JV going. There are several media reports of QR and QF now looking at a copy of the VA/EY JV. There are also multiple articles regarding a QF EK alliance, I think QF and QR would be a much better fit, would be fantastic to see QR in oneworld.

Congratulations to QR and Chicago for another new airline starting service. Having a look online based on the arrival time of the QR flight into DOH, it offers pretty decent connections onwards to India (3-4 hrs) but I'm very curious as to what the return time to Chicago is. Can't find anything online and it seems that it isnt loaded into GDS.

Does anyone know the flight details of this new route?

Boston has been rumored to be first on the list, but it is of course possible the EK retaliates and announces ORD for March, as EK did when EY announced IAD.

I understood that Qatar had Boston on their 'short list,' but wasn't aware Emirates did.

In any event, since ORD will be served using a 773, that means one of the first 787s can be tabbed for Boston. BOS couldn't fill anything bigger than that anyway, and probably not even daily. My guess would be 3x or 4x per week.

Unless historicals to other carrier schedules already operating into ORD are changed enough to open up a time in the 1500 hour, there's no physical place to park the 773 aircraft.

Can't say if this chart is out of date * , but there does seem to be a little wiggle-room, particularly at M4. Are M-19, 20 & 21 out of the question?

I believe M4 is narrowbody only and JCWR56 has advised that M14 is no longer used because it partially blocked gates M13 and M15 during all widebody configuration. Also I have no idea if M19/M20/M21 are narrowbody-only or not. Perhaps JCWR can compile a list of narrowbody gates at the international terminal? I have an updated chart below which is more accurate; gate information was obtained from each airline on one given day earlier this summer. Also, indications suggest that EI, which is adding four extra weekly flights to DUB, may have to tweak their schedule due to congestion here in the afternoons.

Oh, sorry - I was thinking of M6, not M4! As for M19/M20/M21 - I think these were mostly A32x/737/RJs flights from Mexico, Canada (non-preclearance airports) and the like.

I wonder is there any possibility of towing an aircraft to a remote stand to accommodate QR? I know the airport already tows AF and VS away to make room for other arrivals.

Great news for QR and ORD.

This is likely going to be the beginning of the end for RJ's flight, even without EK in the market.

Also, too bad we can't get any 3 class planes with true F seats into the Gulf Region though.

The chart is also missing F9 too. Overall not bad and yes, planes are pulled to accommodate other arrivals or departures.

From announced AB, HU, proposed EI discussed in another thread, you now have QR (announced) and there's still 2 more unanounced flights which are planned during 1500 hour. (I'm one who is of the mind set, I'll believe it when I see the planes land)

Currently and subject to change; AB was planned departing from T5, although my personal belief they'll depart from T3.
HU announced the flight was departing from T5.
EI will be out of T5.
QR will be planned for a T5 departure.

Overall you have 5 additional flights in between 1500-1600 at least 4x a week.

Every gate is designed to handle a narrowbody and there's 13 773, A346 gates. M14 is a dead gate and M6 cannot be used when M5 is occupied.

It seems clear that international traffic out of ORD will only keep growing so the issue of gate space at T5 will have to be raised sooner or later with the City. Should Customs and Border Protection stations be opened in T1 and T3 to get rid of UA/LH/NH/AA/IB/JL from T5 and and free up space? How many years until we see an new international terminal at ORD?

My personal thoughts....

I won't address the opening of T1 and T3 in detail. However, If you look, there's no place for it unless you move DL from T2 and the LCC's from T3. AA and UA are not going to pay for T6. I highly doubt you'll see a new Intl. terminal built if both Star and Oneworld want their own FIS. This is where you'd see AA and UA work to build something together where T2 sits and share costs as a central location between them both.

There's always the ability to build east onto T5 to address increase gate capacity but in doing so will take away remote parking for flights that need to be pulled.

Shifting of schedules is another option outside of the peak times once capacity is reached.

EI flies daily year-round on DUB-ORD. They are proposing to increase capacity to 4 weekly in Summer 2013 - the schedules for the new flights are loaded but are not bookable as of yet.

Are gates allocated on a first-come, first-served basis? Will QR have to join the end of the line, so to speak, with the addition of AB, HU, EI flights first?

EI flies daily year-round on DUB-ORD. They are proposing to increase capacity to 4 weekly in Summer 2013 - the schedules for the new flights are loaded but are not bookable as of yet.
Quoting LFutia (Reply 45):

EI is going to fly an additional 4x a week from DUB

On your chart your missing Taca and Cayman Airways.

Leo/ORD

There is also the extra 4x weekly LX flight missing from here. I flew it from ZRH this past Sunday (LX 2608) and althought I wasn't paying attention, I'd venture to say we parked at gate M12?

It looks like that would make sense considering LX 2609 departs before LX 08 (regularly daily scheduled flight) arrives.

LX 2608 SWISS Airbus Industrie A330-300 ZRH Zurich Airport 09:55 ORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport (Terminal 5) 12:35 • T • T • S S 9h 40m 8 45 0 183 236

LX 2609 SWISS Airbus Industrie A330-300 ORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport (Terminal 5) 14:50 ZRH Zurich Airport 06:20 (+1 day) • T • T • S S 8h 30m 8 45 0 183 236

LX 8 SWISS Airbus Industrie A330-300 ZRH Zurich Airport 12:55 ORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport (Terminal 5) 15:40 M T W T F S S 9h 45m 8 45 0 183 236

LX 9 SWISS Airbus Industrie A330-300 ORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport (Terminal 5) 19:15 ZRH Zurich Airport 10:50 (+1 day) M T W T F S S 8h 35m 8 45 0 183 236

Of course, LX 2608/2609 disappears after the last week in October...

Is HU actually confirmed? I know the DOT has approved the service and I have read reputable sources such as the WSJ confirming its clearance, but no official PR from Hainan as of yet?

Seems like a lot of ground time at ORD. Surely it can't take 5hr40 to turn a 77W?
Quoting AABB777 (Reply 39):
The return flight to DOH is timed to connect to a bank of departing flights ex DOH.

Isn't that fairly usual for QR timings? the IAD flight also sits half a day before the 2300 departure ...

Yes, the aircraft for both IAD and JFK sit on the ground for around 7 hours before returning to DOH. This offers optimal connectivity ex DOH for QR's customers.
