Virgin Australia Goes Full Service On Perth Flight

Wed Aug 15, 2012 12:33 am

Virgin Australia from 26SEP will become full service on long haul trans-con flights SYD/BNE/MEL-PER. Economy passengers will receive meals and beverages regardless of fare type.

Would at least one piece of checked in baggage be included as well? That would make it full service for sure.

Maybe slightly off topic but I will have to say DJ is definitely becoming more Star Alliance compatible than NZ. Just look at NZ's AKL-PER with their Seats 2 Suit model. It's three hours longer but often the fares don't include meals, no check in bags, no official inflight entertainment (abiet the 772 hardware doesn't support locking movie contents by seat so on 772 it's PTV contents are free to all). It's quite interesting to see these 2 alliance partners have chosen the excat opposite direction.

I am very glad that we are seeing DJ take this up market approach, the competition they are bringing to QF will only lead to better products and services. What shape will the economy meals take? Long-Haul standard? It will be interesting to see if we see this expanded across other services.

How does DJ service break down? Capital jet services receive snacks, capital to capital after four free beer and wine, all other BOB and now Perth-East Coast full service. Bit confusing no?

I am very curious to see how the reactionary QF responds, they seem to have mid-long term plans in the pipe work. Will be interesting to hear what they announce over the next couple of months.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Funny how 1 was a LCC now turning into a legacy while the other was a legacy now moving towards an LCC. I know many in NZ don't agree with it either

I think VA has started to realise that it's going to be impossible for them to compete with QF on key routes while offering a lesser service. The branding hasn't matched the experience, which is a big turnoff for customers in Y.

As shocking as it sounds, Y is equally as important as J for the airline when it comes to corporate travel. Fly on any peak hour capital city service and you'll realise that Y is full of high-fare corporate passengers, who expect to find a level of service similar to what they have had in the past on QF, which means free baggage, drinks and the offer of something to eat.

Very confusing... There are also reports on some regional flights of small snacks being served alongside the beverage service. They need to decide what they are doing and apply it across the board before they start running into some major consistency issues. Even on their small fleet of A330's, you could end up on a brand new aircraft, with lieflats in J, international style Y and a new IFE system, or on a 15 year old ex-EK aircraft with an equally old product and IFE system...

If that was the case then they wouldn't be upgrading the service. They would be better off retaining their lower cost base and offering lower fares.

To be honest, I think it's a complete mess! Their product offering is so confused it's incredible.

The key issue is frequent flyers. Everyone wants one world platinum and no one would haev a clue what even the program for Virgin is. I personally think they'll benefit from the ever increasing demand from holiday makers looking for the cheaper price but in Business they will struggle. Luckilly for Qantas they have a another brand similar to virgin in Jetstar.

Jet star is nothing like Virgin Australia. Qantas are the underdog now IMO.

??? That is a very odd statement. Please explain. QF still has a significantly larger share of the business passengers, with a much more consistent, and arguably better offering. In terms of passenger perspective, QF is certainly the much better airline. So Im interested as to how QF is the underdog...

I know hundreds of people who have used Qantas Business. Nobody who has used Virgin Business. Virgin are completely out of their league in the business sector imo. their product is irrelavent, it's the frequent flyers with one world which is what most business travellers will care about the most by an absolute mile.

Even more confusing! So regional services receive a higher standard of service than regular mainline -- strange... At least with QF, one knows what they are getting when they book the flight.

Virgin is doing a lot of jumping around trying to be noticed, and they are doing it exceptionally well. But they are still the weaker airline, trying to make up ground on QF/JQ, doing what they can to pull corporate customers and still unable to show a positive financial impact resulting from the rebranding/overhaul.

QF will never be the underdog in the domestic market. They are too big and strong to be challenged.

Yes... that theory worked well for PANAM, Eastern, Varig, Ansett, Sabena, Swissair........

You are entitled to your opinion sir, I am very intrigued as to how you arrived at such an opinion and the logic of it.
