KLM A330 Flights To ABC Islands: Eff. Oct 28 2012

Thu Aug 16, 2012 1:33 am

Just got this message from a good friend that KLM will start A330 flights to the ABC islands starting this upcoming winter season (Oct. 28). I just checked their website and can so far see flight KL761 as an A330-200 flight, great!!! Finally something different from KLM. I honestly didn't see this coming so soon but seeing that they already started phasing out their MD11's, it doesn't surprise me even though I expected them to use the 777 to CUR. The A333 would have been much nicer but this aircraft apparently is weight restricted on such a long flight which KL can't allow on this route.

Does anyone have KL's schedule to CUR for the entire week this upcoming winter?

Great thanks HB-IWC, I knew I can count on you. KL used to have 7 744 flights and 2 MD11 flights to CUR so KL is decreasing capacity to CUR for the coming winter season. Since MP's take-over I notice KL is downsizing on the CUR route.

Oh, darn, I thought for a minute there that KLM was starting service to Admirality, Baranof and Chichagof Islands.
Sounds like a Beaver on floats..........we're saved!!

For me personally its a shame to see such a decrease in flights to the ABC islands in the past years... i still remember those days when AUA saw 6x weekly 747 service all year round..

Good to see them changing to modern equipment though! Hope this will help in the battle against Arke and Air Berlin etc.

It indeed was more in the past but probably the economic crisis and more competition are causing KL to downgrade the capacity to/from the Dutch Caribbean. Hopefully it will pick up again in the future.

A decrease in the total number of seats probably means KL is also trying to drive up yields. The result will most likely mean more customers for TFL on the ABC-routes, who will be adding a 6th 767 next year (ex ThomsonFly).

Funny, in a few years I expect we'll have people eager to see the last few MD-11's and then bemoaning the final departure of these aircraft from the fleet

IIRC KL used to tag South American destinations on from CUR (GYE/UIO?) -- did those 744/M11 flights continue on elsewhere from CUR?

Five years ago KL started nonstop flights to LIM and just last year the same thing happened with the UIO/GYE flights. Now there are no more southbound tags from the Antilles. The last couple of years LIM was served through AUA and UIO/GYE through BON. Not sure about LIM, but Equador was served with the MD11.

In the last period both LIM and GYE where served through BON... Currently the use the T7 to LIM.

While KL is decreasing capacity to the ABC islands, KL will increase capacity to UIO/GYE and LIM. The AMS-UIO-GYE-AMS route will increase to 5x weekly (B77W 2x weekly and B772 3x weekly) and the AMS-LIM route will operate 4x weekly with the B772 and 3x weekly with the B77W.

As MauriceB said, those flights are now direct flights using the 777. They increase those flights because they have no direct competition while the ABC has direct competition from Arkefly who is doing very well on those routes.

KL is increasing capacity into LIM and UIO/GYE during the Northern Winter season to increase cargo yields. The ABC islands are not cargo intensive destinations like UIO/GYE and LIM.

I was about to edit my post, cargo demand also necessitates more capacity, yes.

I was just talking to a buddy of mine at KLM about this. I am wondering if eventually the whole region will see the A330 family. Especially CUR, which of the ABC islands is considered a cash cow for KLM, comparing to AUA, BON & SXM. Especially when it comes to premium traffic.

KLM schedules have changed so much over the years. They tried just about everything! They routed UIO/GYE & LIM flights over all three islands. The tried terminators on SXM and AUA. Then a short while you had the SJU/SXM combo. Years before that you had CCS in the mix.

There was even a time that BON had no KLM flights at all! And a few years back neither did AUA.. etc. etc. All with DC10, MD11, 743 & 744.

My last MD11 flights were AMS-AUA-LIM-AUA-AMS if I remember right 2000 or 2001. A very nice connection.

That is some very interesting news. Then I wouldn't be surprised if KLM would start phasing out the MD11 sooner than planned.

I also suspect the 744 (& 74M) might start phasing out during the next 5 years, while the deliveries of the 789 should be coming in starting 2016-ish.

With the 332 coming to the ABC islands, they could just as well make the Dutch Caribbean an A330 equipped service only somewhere in the future.

Next to AUA & BON (which will be 332 service), SXM could support a 5-7 weekly A332 (which connects through CUR) and CUR could support a 11-14 weekly A332 (for which some flights are shared with the other islands).

The A330 would make more sense than the 777 for the ABC islands in the long run, because KLM could easily change between the 332 and 333 on short notice when demand fluctuates.

Just my 2 cents, but lets see how it all work out in the end...
