RE: 787 Production/Delivery Thread Part 7

Fri Aug 17, 2012 1:45 pm

Ethiopian Airlines has taken delivery of their first 787-8 (ZA262 | LN 49 | ET-AOQ), becoming the third operator for the type.

China Southern's first 787-8 (ZA382 | LN 43 | B-2727) has rolled out of the paint hangar in a special - and very catching - paint scheme.

LAN's first 787-8 (ZA536 | LN 68 | CC-BBA) is also in full colors (    ) and being prepared for delivery.

And while there was hope Air India would finally take delivery of at least one of their 787-8s today, that appears to continue to be held up by the Indian governmental bureaucracy.

Is there anyone who will be able to confirm if Boeing and AI concluded the first 787 delivery tomorrow?

If so, can someone get to PAE and snap a photo of it on its way to India? Also can anyone get to wherever it's going in India so we can finally say it's been officially delivered? Like I keep saying, I'll believe it once it touches down in the subcontinent.

Any spotters try to go to PAE to see any Air India 787s talking off New Delhi are going to be disappointed since all the service ready 787 for Air India are at CHS.

Even so, the PAE spotters would appear to have an equal chance of seeing an AI 787 taking off to New Delhi today as the folks in CHS

How true!

And while we're on the topic of AI 787s at CHS, there are four 787s now on the flight line at CHS. ZA238 (LN 54) is back out with a replacement engine hanging off the right wing. Given that all assembly activities are complete on this particular aiplane I do anticipate that it should have its first flight in about 2 weeks.

I was SO hoping those Air India 787s would start leaving today... I'm ready to see a new livery on the flightline out here. I hope we end up with a China Southern or LAN bird here, those things are gorgeous. I'm not too familiar with spotting and good spots to take pics around here at CHS, but I am willing to learn if anyone has any tips!

I wish it was CC-BBA, but LAN needs the B-767-316ERs fast in order to increase flights to North America and capacity on routes with-in South America. LAN has 9 more B-767-316ERs on order and is one of the only carriers that is currently incorporating brand new B-767-300ERs and B-787s into its fleet simultaneously.

A source revealed that Boeing did not make any deliveries to Air India today nor were tehy expecting to deliver any 787 from Charleston today. The Air India/GoI drama goes on.

Hearing an unconfirmed rumor that Air India's 787 delivery is now being pushed back to September. What a joke of an airline.

It is sad that 5 787s were scheduled to fly today, yet only one made it up. There was also a 748 on the board, it got as far as a flight plan before being cancelled. I suppose they will all fly when the weather turns bad here in Seattle.

It's a lousy democracy which has resulted in the lousy bureaucracy. The government's primary purpose is to stay in power (usually accomplished through harmful populist measures which the uneducated masses adore), so that they can loot the country.

You can't calculate an exact cost to Boeing for the AI delay unless you know AI's actual price and Boeing's cost of money, but using some rough estimates I won't embarrass myself by sharing, I am guessing around $10,000 per plane per day. That's around $1.2 million per month for 4.

Anyone else want to make a guess?

Boeing's profit last year was around $4 billion. The delay will barely show up in the financials but is enough to really annoy the CFO.

I noticed one of the financial news lines stating Boeing is working to reduce the Boeing and Customer test flights form 6 each on average to two each (par with the 737). That may lead to some interim delays as more work packages will need to be completed first. Should save on fuel as well.

Not in the final assembly line yet, but production of components is under way.

As of the end of July, engineering release was 80% complete. I don't know about the whole airplane, but I've heard that an extremely high proportion of releases has been on time. Our hundreds of releases have been 100% on or ahead of time, so at least on the design and engineering side things look good.

I don't know the dates other than the very vague first flight in 2013 and delivery early 2014.

Last time I heard the first 787-9 would be LN126, first flight Q3 2013 and EIS Q2 2014. Going to be a tight flight testing schedule, but as you experienced things are looking far better prepared than with the 787-8. So maybe Boeing can make up a little bit of time.

I expect the 787-9 to be the biggest seller of 787 family, so let's hope for a far smoother test program and production ramp-up than the -8.

Can't wait to see the first 787-9 for KL!

Even then, how big is that pie going to be?

The IAF have six IL-78 tankers and they'd already chosen the A330MRTT once, so no guarantee the KC-767 will win the re-bid and even if they do, what's a half-dozen units worth? They also just signed a huge deal with Russia for the Sukhoi PAK FA so they're not going to be buying F-15s or F-18s. Nor do I see the CH-47 or AH-64 in their future inventory.

Yes, they have bought the C-17 to replace the IL-76, but they don't look to be adding more before the C-17 program is closed. They have also purchased 8 P-8I Neptunes and might take up to 16 more, but they're also adding a prop-based maritime patrol aircraft so I don't see a huge fleet of P-8I's in the IN's future.

Finally. Now let's take a look at the last know delivery schedule (copied from the previous thread):

ET-AOQ 14 Aug
JA803A 20 Aug
A7-BCB 22 Aug
JA814A 28 Aug
JA813A 30 Aug
JA828J 30 Aug
CC-BBA 30/31 Aug

Of the above list, 2 have been delivered (ET-AOQ, JA803A) and another 4 made their B1 flight or several test flights (A7-BCB, CC-BBA, JA813A, JA828J). Only one hasn't flown yet (JA814A) and might slip into next month?

That is big news! I thought they would never get that one out the door, seemed to be clogging things up!

AI delayed yet again. On the bright side, this weekend is looking more and more likely.
