JetBlue HQ Sign

Fri Aug 17, 2012 11:42 am

I did a search but didn't find anything, but I noticed jetBlue's sign atop their headquarters. Something I certainly didn't notice in the days before - unless I just simply forgot to look up - and I figured with all the jetBlue afficionados on here, there would have been something posted about it going up.

The sign basically looks like the artist's rendering here...

I am pretty sure that that sign, with all it's free advertising is the reason why they stayed in NYC. Of course all the incentives helped too!

Well if that's the case, that's a pretty poor reason. Seems the only place to really see it is the Astoria & Flushing bound platform on the 7 & N/Q trains.

You're kidding right?

Queensboro Plaza is one of the busiest stations in the city AND the entrance to the 59th Street bridge is right there AND the sign is actually visible from Manhattan.

The sign might be a glimmer from Manhattan but at that point it's so far away it's just a little blurp on the horizon. The best place to see it from Manhattan will be FDR East River drive - and if you're trying to read a billboard sitting way the heck over yonder while driving on that fine piece of roadway instead of driving your car and avoiding a major accident, god be with you.

On top of that, the Queensboro Plaza station - people aren't looking at a sign. They're staring down the tracks waiting for the next train. They'll notice the advertisements for Delta on the subway cars long before they'll really see or care about a sign for jetBlue.

Third, with the 4-5 new condo projects getting ready to go up this fall in Long Island City, and another 5 planned to go up next year, you won't be seeing much of that sign behind the trees.

And fourth, it's a sign. 'jetBlue'. Signs don't do much. "jetBlue" - ok great. Now what? In advertising, the most responsive command to do something is a male voice.

I basically agree with this. Signs just remind you that a brand exists; they don't do much marketing on their own. It's certainly not a reason to stay in NYC. A better reason to stay in NYC would be a sweetheart deal on rent and taxes, which they probably got, because the city's been working really hard to resuscitate that particular area. It used to be filled with gangs and prostitutes; now they're trying to turn it into SoHo East (with some success, I must say).

The sign is more of a "because we can" type of thing... if they have the air rights, why *not* put a big sign there?

Wish I could work in that building - I've actually applied to a couple positions there!

Boy oh boy.....from the sound of this quote, I take it your not a B6 fan....Well for a little insight.....Jetblue does not depend on a sign they placed on their rooftop for advertisement.....The building itself at street level is marked all over with the jetblue logo so people know where it is if they were in need to find it.... Also, doesn't it strike you funny that in fact, unlike other airlines(example:Delta, AA, United) that run TV commercials and advertisement on platforms and cabs and walls......B6 really doesnt have all that .....yet they have record profit quarters year after year........ guess word of mouth(Male or Female) works just as good as visual signs....

JetBlue most certainly does have ads on platforms and cabs and walls. Maybe not as many as DL, AA or UA, but then they are a smaller airline with a smaller ad budget. Admittedly I've been driving to work lately but it wasn't *too* long ago that I used to take the train every day and I'd see those "Happy Jetting" ads all over the place, on the LIRR and subway.

Edit: here's a blog post with some of those ads: http://www.coloribus.com/adsarchive/...ue-airline-happy-jetting-13196105/

Incorrect. I've flown jetBlue - they got me from point a to point b. I've also walked by the building. The building only has one "jetBlue" marking -- it's next to the "MetLife" sign at the front door. jetBlue also has numerous advertisements on the MTA. I've also seen their ad inside cabs. Typically what happens is airlines, companies, what have you go out and buy packaged media from their media placement vendors. jetBlue will give approval to up to say 10 or 20 different advertisements which may run as part of that package.
I'm not attacking jetBlue or its employees in any way shape or form - I'm simply talking about the logistics of placing this sign on the building and its purpose.

Here is a photo of the actual sign

It hasn't been officially unveiled yet, I believe that communications will go out shortly announcing the sign's completion. As far as I know, the lighting is still being installed for night time illumination

All this arguing over a stupid sign? It's a sign and nothing more. I'm sure some will notice and others will not. If they are depending on a sign on top of a short building for revenue then they are in trouble.

I think Jet Blue has done well with advertising on a limited budget for their size. I have noticed a decent amount in Houston. I think they have the right idea and they need to keep moving forward.

Not sure if it's MetLife or jetBlue, but when you pass by the building, there's a lot of Yoga classes going on in there.

Has anybody ever heard of a sign being "a source of revenue?" No, but you are right, it's just a SIGN. It recognizes the brand, nothing more nothing less. Putting a sign on their headquarters building, such blasphemy!

I heard that the sign framework on the building next to jetBlue's MetLife office used to have Pan Am signage many moons ago. Ironic because MetLife took over the Pan Am signage on the building above Grand Central - which got me thinking that I haven't heard anybody refer to it as the "Pan Am Building" in a very long time!

Ever thought that they might have a fitness club in the building? A lot of corporate offices do nowadays... doesn't seem too far of a stretch at a building owned by an insurance company.

Yes, I'm quite aware. Just haven't figured out if the class if Metlife or jetBlue. If it's jetBlue, they should get some jetBlue yoga mats - it's quite visible from the Qboro Plaza station, since we're talking about brand recognition

Not even "many moons" (unless you're very young, I guess). When I lived in Astoria up until the mid-2000's I passed by that Pan Am sign on the N train every day. I'm pretty sure I remember it still being there when we moved in 2005 or 2006.

I never saw it, guess I never had a reason to go to Long Island City and certainly not in 2005-6. I didn't realize it was up that recently!

JetBlue advertises quite heavily in Boston. TV ads, cabs, subway stations, subway cars, etc.

I think there's a gym in the MetLife building on the ground floor level or on one of the lower floors.

Oddly enough, I've seen far more B6 advertising underground than any other airline's lately. I keep seeing "Air Fair" ads and a few months ago I saw a lot of B6 Vacations ads. Now that I think about it, I haven't seen any DL advertising in the past few months, and the only UA ads I've seen are ones that advertise the Olympics, usually pasted on the train exteriors.

Another huge help is that they're charging a fraction of what UA, DL and AA charge. The other day I priced out a ticket. For similar times on a route, B6 charged just shy of $200 out of JFK with a quick connection for what AA and UA charged $950 for out of LGA and EWR, respectively.
Give me a break, I created this username when I was a kid...

The lights will be going on the sign next Wednesday - the 29th with a little shin dig to celebrate. If anyone from jetBlue plans to attend - look for me!

Also in jetBlue news ... jetBlue's looking to expand in Colombia. One of the routes mentioned is from San Juan to Colombia ... be interesting to see what San Juan - Latin America routes come as jetBlue focuses on their San Juan operations.

Little bump here ... the discussed jetBlue sign will have its official lighting ceremony on Wed, 8/29 at 7:30 p.m. at jetBlue headquarters. Mayor Michael R Bloomberg and every flight attendant's favorite senator, Chuck Schumer, will be on hand for the ceremonies on the roof of jetBlue headquarters.

However, here's a little preview.

I'll be at the event tomorrow - if you're there, say hi.

Wonderful!

It is funny how a lot of people put the sign down as nothing.

The sign will be visible to tens of thousands of commuters a day on the 7, Q, and N trains as well as drivers coming over the bridge.

It is a huge deal for the company, evidenced by the ceremony and the politicians in attendance.

And of course, a huge deal for the city to have a major airline headquartered here again

You can't really see it coming over the bridge. The tresses are in the way. And if you're riding on the N or the Q, you won't be able to see it unless you turn around and look up -- and that's depending on where you are in the car. I was at Dutch Kills and walked straight up and didn't even notice it until I popped into Dunkin Donuts then went up to snap the shot.

Less people will see it than you think.

There used to be a huge Pan Am sign on the building just to the right. The frame is still intact on the roof and just the frame dwarfs the new jetblue sign. You can see it in the pic in the OP's link

That sign on that building was ICONIC! Hard to believe there is a whole generation out there that never saw it or remember the "Pan Am Building"... rarely ever hear it called that anymore.
