Transaero Airlines

Mon Oct 16, 2000 11:04 am

Hello. I recently had a friend ask me about a flight to London from Moscow and I researched the lowest fare, and the airline was Transaero. Can someone please tell me a little about this airline? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

Transaero was formed in 1992 as the first independently-operated airline ever in the former Soviet Union. Its flight crews and cabin staff were trained by Air France to ensure Transaero would provide a level of service which was at that time unheard of in Russia. As the airline's route network grew, it was also able to give itself the distinction of being the first and only Russian airline to lease and operate Western aircraft. Its fleet was for awhile comprised of Boeing 737-200s on short-to medium-range routes, and Boeing 757-200s on long-haul routes, and a single IL86 for charters. In the mid-90s, Transaero leased three McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30s from American Airlines to provide long-range services between Moscow and Los Angeles, as well as a few other far-off destinations. However, with the economic crash that occurred in 1998, Transaero nearly went bankrupt, slashed many routes, and had to return most of its Western aircraft, excluding the 737-200s, to the lessors. The airline has rebuilt itself and is now distinguished as the only Russian carrier to order new 737NGs directly from Boeing.

If your friend flies London-Moscow on Transaero, he/she will be aboard a Boeing 737, either -200 or -700. Though I have never flown Transaero, I know many people who have, and all have said the service is impeccable and the planes clean.

When I flew Transaero on London-Moscow route three years ago, we had a stop at Riga (capital of Luthiania). The advantage of this, apart from extra duty-free shopping, is double-meals  .

My pal flew Moscow - London a month ago and they flew non-stop. He couldn't tell the aircraft type (he's ignorant to aviation, grr...) - but I assumed from his descriptions it's an NG 737.

The B737-200s they operate seemed clean but could've been better. But what do I know about 737-200s... flown the same type with AF and still thought they could've been clearner. Maybe it's age that affects the aircraft's interior impression.
