Allegiant Returning To Springfield (SPI)

Wed Aug 22, 2012 12:08 pm

After briefly offering service from Springfield to Las Vegas, their route map this morning this showing Springfield to Punta Gorda, clickable from their website under "travel tools" at www.allegiantair.com

Vision Airlines had operated Springfield to Ft Myers seasonally....

It is not bookable on the website as of yet, though.

The combination of BLV/BMI-SFB and SPI-PGD is interesting. Are they trying to avoid cannibalizing themselves?

It's smart in that it spreads the branding. However, I figured we'd see Bloomington/Normal to Punta Gorda before opening up a whole new city. They must have some insight to how Vision did in the market.

Agreed.

As long as they aren't paying for their ground handling either place - and I expect they are not - it probably doesn't make a lot of difference whether it's one city or two. The two are close enough together that Bloomington folks who want to fly to PGD will make the drive.

I wonder what this will do to the PIA-PGD route that they recently started. PIA-PIE/AZA/LAS routes all saw sharp declines when G4 came into MLI. I noticed in the schedule extension, PIA-PGD starts in November/December and goes until the end of the schedule extension. PIA-PIE also has some pretty large seasonal increases. I hope they aren't spreading themselves too thin.

It does seem odd to have so many small stations so close together, but in addition to what you said, they got a federal grant for starting this route out of SPI.

Maybe they can start service to MYR out of CMI and FLL out of DEC just to keep the trend going! (Kidding)

Allegiant To Begin Springfield-To-Florida Service Nov. 6

"Non-stop flights between Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport and Punta Gorda Airport initially will be offered Tuesday and Saturday at an introductory fare of $92.99 one way, taxes and fees included.

Flight To Punta Gorda Returns To SPI

"Hanna also tells us he's excited to have Allegiant back because that airline can open more destination opportunities for Springfield. Places like Las Vegas, Pheonix, Orlando, and St. Petersburg. Besides Chicago and Dallas as destinations, the airport also provides service to Myrtle Beach, by way of Vision Airlines. That flight, however, ends Sunday."
