Recent AF Go-around At SXM Due To Trop Storm Isaac

Mon Aug 27, 2012 11:28 pm

Did a search for SXM but nothing came up.

See the below link for a cool recent video of a go-around at SXM of an AF 340. Looks like a hard crosswind landing that they decided to abort.

You'll have to ignore the exaggeration and hyperbol in the comments/title (as in most Youtube videos) though. At the time it was a tropical storm and not a hurricane.... and I'm not sure how it is "extremely" late as I suppose any abort prior to touchdown is on time

A shame there is no HD version of the video.

That is very late to initiate a go around.

With no ILS and only 7,500 ft of runway, that's a tough approach in bad weather for any widebody. I'm not surprised to see a go around.

It's interesting to see how slow it climbs

While likely a visual approach considering the good visibility, 7500 feet is certainly challenging in those kind of winds. He had a pretty good crab angle going there for a while, and it looks like they got a decent sink as they crossed over land. Would be fun to watch, though, that's for sure! Then again, there isn't much of a beach there to enjoy...

Interesting to see the waves coming up against the rocks - I'm so used to having the lounge chairs from the bar in the sand, even at high tide (yes I know it was due to a tropical storm, just interesting to see Maho beach covered lol).

Obviously this is in jest, but the climb performance there isn't actually too bad... And of course, it climbs very nicely with an engine out, which is the important part, and especially useful for SXM!

Doesn't appear so; there's a link in the video description to the second (and sucessful) landing, about 15 minutes later.

Don't forget, that even after the pilot initiates a go-around, it's not unusual for the aircraft to lose a significant amount of altitude. This looked like a normal approach to land and a standard decision to go-around. Nothing really out of the ordinary.

I've been in a couple of go arounds. One of them, due to strong cross-winds at BCN when coming in from FRA on a LH A320, was initiated once we were already over the runway, not more than a couple of seconds before the expected touch down. I didn't find it abnormal.

Is it just me or does it appear that he is carrying a tad bit more airspeed in the second video?
...are we there yet?

They don't climb - they get into ground effect, and rely on the curvature of the Earth to do the rest.

Here is a video of an NK A319 that did a go around at LAS a few weeks ago. You can see it still lose some altitude even after the engines spool up.

Well, isn´t it SOP on go-arounds to not retract the gear until you have confirmed a Positive Rate of Climb? I assume this video illustrates why.

Very late indeed and could've been a costly decision too... Remember the incident in Canada during a storm and aircraft ended up crash landing jumping the runway and into an embankment...

There is no "late Go Around" ... A late Go Around is the one that is not performed and the plane crashes ...
A Go Around can be performed even after the wheels touch the Rwy (happened to me at JFK last September).

By Definition, a Go Around is always "late" !!!!

That airplane never attempted a go-around.
