United To Move Express Flights To Terminal 1 @ SFO

Fri Aug 31, 2012 5:01 am

I think this is a very good decision. Bring mainline flights back to the old Shuttle pier. This is from the Employee's website.

"Since we began using gates in Terminal 1 in June at SFO to augment our operation in Terminal 3 and the International Terminal, customers and co-workers have transferred between terminals via airside bus links. Beginning next month, United Express will operate more than 100 flights from Terminal 1, freeing up gate space in Terminal 3 and reducing peak passenger loads on the buses.

These changes will allow us to more than double the number of flights operating at Terminal 1, reducing aircraft taxi time and gate waits at Terminal 3 for our arriving and connecting customers and crews.

Hub Managing Director Mike Hanna said that the changes in the September schedule that move the majority of United Express flying into one terminal will result in a more constant flow of smaller numbers of customers deplaning from regional jets. "Co-workers have done a phenomenal job with a tough plan," Mike said. "We have a great team working very hard, and with this change we'll have the right plan and the right people to deliver the right product to our customers."

Well, if **all** OO UAX flights are moving from gates 71 though 79 over to terminal 1, then they're gonna need a bigger bus. The ones they're using now only hold twenty or so people.

Okay, then are the SoCal mainlines moving back to F Concourse?

It'll be interesting to see how they're going to fit the majority of the 150+ UAX flights into the old CO gates... Perhaps they will keep the CR7's operating out of T3.

There is no F Concourse. It sounds like the mainline departures will be moving back to T3, UA's domestic terminal...

UA's international departures leave from the G gates.

When is 60-67 going to be reopened? 60-67 are needed. Does anyone know what the master plan is for those the south concourse? When United can move entirely back to the north side, will they try and replicate the design of the north Terminal with the South?

The plan is to begin renovation of Terminal 1 sometime after B/A E (gates 60-67) is completed. Skip to page 31.

Are they accelerating this operation? I had a pax tonight who came in on a UAX flight and ended up coming out of security in Terminal 1.

For that matter, with the SoCal flights, I was under the impression that UA was getting them off the aircraft and immediately onto buses, but tonight's experience implies that it's at least possible to bypass the bus and enter Terminal 1.

This is going to be a mess until some sort of consistency is determined and travelers figure it out...although, at the same time, the space/gate relief is desperately needed...

Didn't you know?

Terminal 3 and "F" are one and the same.

Just as big, it'll minimize crew delays since all of the flights will be in the same terminal.

Just last month I've had a SFO-LAS flight that departed out of international G concourse ... guess gate space is a real problem for UA

Well... no, T3 also has "E", which is currently closed.

The only "one and the same" case at SFO is T2 and D.

Not until late 2013 or early 2014. The have essentially torn the old terminal down and are rebuilding it due to asbestos contamination.

On at least one occasion, a blue-shirted TSA person told me "There are no shuttle buses anymore," and instructed me to take the monorail over to terminal 1. No big deal. It was nice outside, and I needed the exercise anyway. On the other hand, the Terminal 1 TSA guys were waaaay laid back, and I got through in record time.

There is one shared gate in that concourse finger that is rarely used. It says FL/WN on the wall, but I've never seen a plane there. Perhaps it can be bartered for.

They might have to park OO planes remotely and shuttle folks to their flights -- something like they used to do at EWR.

That could work. If so they would probably end up using the RON stands next to the old TWA Building.

The pre-Aerotrain rental-car-shuttle and long-term-parking shuttle buses still exist--are in storage. I wonder if they're serviceable enough to do this kind of duty?

OK...let me an try to answer all these

Not all OO flights are moving. The 700's will still mainly stay in T3. The numbers are 65% of the operations will be moved to T1 as of Sept. 5th

The whole pier was relined over the last 10 days. Each gate will have multiple lines for OO a/c. I can't share the blueprints, however there will be a lot of gates. UAL has also taken over gate 24 from Alaska which can accommodate 2 Brasilias

Quoting jamake1 (Reply 3):

There is an F concourse. Gates 76A-90

Quoting kgaiflyer (Reply 14):

There will be no remote parking. All OO a/c will be at the 30 gates and 24, or at T3 70-79

Those are the city's spots and used for RON or a/c maint. only. Mainly VX/WN/DL

April 2014 as of right now. No the concourse will have an original and unique look to any other concourse.

April 2014 is a long time from now, but yeah its basically been torn down to the ground.

Do you know anything more about plans for using it? Will UA actually get it, and how big is it going to be?

United uses all of the G gates that face F after the international flights depart for domestic... I get on a lot of flights over there.

So, if they're going to start flying mainline flights from where express currently ops - are they going to make that part of the concourse any, you know, less crowded?

Don't get me wrong - I love that the new United is super stoked about SFO. But its getting a little crazy over there.

The gates will be Star gates with UA/AC/US. However, if US merge's with AA, then that will leave more gates for UA.

Considering the speed the City and County of San Francisco moves on airport construction projects, i consider April 2014 quick.

UA needs to better inform their staff of what is going on. I am at gate 92F (aka 36) right now waiting for a flight to OTH. I got at least 4 different answers on how to get to this gate from Terminal 3!!! In addition, none of the signs even acknowledged a gate 92F, the signs all said 92A-E. On a more positive note, the shuttle bus gave us a glimpse of the guts of the airport which is always fun.

SInce UAX flights getting pulled down to protect fullsize flights during bad weather this will keep those disruptions away from the rest of the operation.
