Emergency!

-Ever had to make an emergency landing?
-Ever veiwed an emergency landing?
-Ever had to evacuate?

I have viewed an Emergency Landing. I think it was last year.It was at CLT. And my Dad and I were at the observation area where you can watch the planes take off and land. Anyways, a U.S. Airways 757 landed, but taxied to the hangar and stopped. And the television crews arrived not too long after. I forgot what the reason was for the emergency landing, all I remember is that it was coming into CLT from Ft.Lauderdale.

I had to land a Cessna 172 with no engine. Does that count? We were flying over the airport at 4500ft and my CFI pulled the mixture all the way out and told me to land it. He talked me through it... It was actually kinda fun.


Not an emergency... but as close as I hope to get.

Aren't emergency landings supposed to be practiced with the throttle in idle? From what I understand your instructor actually turned the engine of completely, hmmmmm....

when i was just a wee baby, we had a tire blow out on a monarch 737 on take off. we couldnt stwo the gear so we had to make an emergency landing in the middle of no where. during landing we had to be in the brace position and after we stoped on the runway, we all deplaned and stood around for hours while the wheel was thourly inspected. i have a picture of the wheel being inspected, but my scanner doesnt scan at a high enough quality for me to post it on airliners.net

We had the APU fire horn go off in flight once... It was a false alarm, but we shaved 30 minutes off our flight time, and got the greetings of the ARFF trucks.. its amazing how fast you get to your destination when you declare an emergancy. They punched the fire bottles, fire trucks followed us back to the gate, inspected it, used an air start and sent it on its way.

I was in an emergancy landing once. It was a DL flight from CVG-SFO, and we had to make a landing DFW due to engine failure. It was scary, to think of the possiblilities.... but once we were on the ground, and safe, I actually thought to myself "What a cool experience" BUT, I wouldn't wish it apon anyone, and thank GOD we ended up safe... it could have ben much worse. It was also amazing how professional, calm, and great the cabin crew was!

I ahve seen the fireball of a plane dropping from the sky. It was Lockerbie and the Pan Am 747, that was one hell of a scary experience and i was 10 miles away from Lockerbie at the time. Thats something i would never wish on anyone.

Gyro you're right. Delta777 must mean throttle to idle. Pulling the mixture would be a particularly stupid thing to do, execpt of course as part of the final shut down drill in a real emergency

I've seen Thai's TG601 (747-400) on 22 August 2000 emergency landing in HKG. They took off for Bangkok, and then reported to the tower that they cannot retract their gears, so they just turned back and landed. This was around 11am, and until 6pm when I left the airport the plane was still on the ground... guess they're gone on the other 777s.

Apparently some CFIs still think it is best to do a real engine failure by yanking the mixture. Personaly if I had a CFI do that on a single I would fire them as soon as I got on the ground.
