Iberia A340 At LHR Last Night

Tue Sep 04, 2012 9:20 am

What was an Iberia A340 doing on the apron at Terminal 5 at LHR last night, around 19.30? High capacity flight to Madrid? Charter?

Having looked through the timetable, it looks like one early evening flight on each of BA and Iberia is operated by a widebody (767 for BA, A340 for Iberia) - presumably to capture both the 'end of day' business traffic from London to Madrid (and incoming connections from the BA network), and to feed Iberia's South and Central America evening departures....? Was not aware of this scheduling, and was surprised to see it last night but I guess that must be the explanation.

It also operates to ship cargo between the two hubs.

Interesting, thanks. Does the A340 then get turned around in MAD for an overnight to the Americas? Seems to arrive into MAD fairly late (22.00 or so) for the aircraft to be turned around, unless it operates something departing around 01.00 am?

I have seen them a few times whilst waiting in LHR . They often run it down to MAD. I think the IB3167 at 18:40 is a regular 342 service.

IB's A340s (-300s and -600s) have been a pretty regular sight at LHR for some months now. I think there's only one a day though.

This is a daily flight. Usually the 346 parks up at T5C. Often see it over central London on my way home from work.
Next Flights: LHR-OSL (738), OSL-CPH (320), CPH-LHR (321), LHR-HEL (359), HEL-LHR (359)

It can easily be turned around for a flight to the Americas, as IB has a few flights that depart at around 00.30, and it can manage some rather short turn-arounds of 90 mins, or so.

Yep! E.g. today, it had:

0020: Santiago
0035: Buenos Aires
0035: Mexico City
0040: Sao Paulo
0045: Lima
0220: Montevideo

It's often a 346 and sometimes a 343 (you're pictures are 346s by the way).

I asked this question a while back and the principal response was that it's very lucrative for cargo.

Iberia only operates the A340-300 and A346.

Exactly, the IB A340 flight flies with poor passenger loads, but absolutely full of cargo, which I would guess connects to South America.

It must be a great experience, especially in Business, having a lie flat seat for a 2 hour flight! This must be the shortest A340 flight in the World (apart from perhaps the LAN Madrid-Frankfurt tag?)

But on their booking system or whatever it is misleading, 342 is down as the equipment used on certain routes. There was a thread on this matter a few months ago

In sure they actually operate a MAD - BCN flight with an A343, which then continues on to GRU; Sundays IIRC.

That would surely be the shortest A340 flight, even though I suppose it is technically a positioning flight where seats are sold!

Always nice to see an A340 about anyway

Yeah, im booked on a BA 767 to MAD and an IB A343 back again in October. Been using A340's on the route for around a year now. They used them a few years back too for a period.

I believe it stays in MAD. IB flies 340s between MAD and BCN as non-schengen flights full of connecting pax from BCN into IB's long-haul destinations.

Yes, it's one of the initiatives of the newly created IAG Cargo.

JNB-CPT often run with an SAA A346, although with a similar 2hr block time

The IB A346 or 343 is a daily run. I'm booked on the A346 in November LHR-MAD. Trip report coming up !

Iberia 343: A340-300 with 36J / 218Y seats (9 aircraft)
Iberia 342: A340-300 with 24J / 267Y seats (7 aircraft)

As has been discussed here quite often (there has been a thread or two about this and a link to one of them has been put in this thread), those aircraft with the code "342" are equipped with newer slimline seats in economy and individual power outlets. And before someone asks, there are no plans to install PTVs on any A340-300, as most, if not all of them, will start being phased out soon (5 of Iberia's A343s have been retired so far and 2 of them are flying with South African Airways already).

LHR-MAD is short, but not the shortest

CX flies their 343 on HKG-TPE, 200 nm or so shorter

LX often uses A330/A340's ZRH-GVA and vv. for positioning, and AFAIK utilize the aircraft on scheduled flights.
ZRH-GVA is only 143nm according the global circle mapper, whereas HKG-TPE is 501nm.
