Nasty Trick Turns US Flight Back To PHL.

Fri Sep 07, 2012 1:30 am

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-...-philly-after-possible-prank-call/

Apparently somebody called in a tip that somebody onthe flight was carrying a suspicious substance, which was untrue. Flight 1267 had to turn back to PHL after taking off for, and flying one third of the way across Pennsylvania, towards DFW.

People are getting downrit cruel with their pranks lately.

The good thing thing is that usually they catch these people, so it´s just a matter of time. I wonder how many charges that person is going to face.

Now it gets really curious.

The man who was the 'apparent hoax victim' was arrested upon his arrival at DFW Airport this evening.

Quote:
D/FW AIRPORT - Chris N. Shell, 29, was arrested by D/FW Airport Police Thursday night in Terminal E as he arrived on a 6:10 p.m. U.S. Airways flight from Philadelphia, said David Magana, airport spokesman.

Shell faces more than one warrant from more than one municipality, Magana added, but he would not reveal what the warrants are for or which agencies issued them.

They’ll be included on the police report tomorrow, Magana said.

.......

Philadelphia police Chief Joseph Sullivan said it was eventually discovered the man was a victim of a "pretty nasty trick." ABC News has reported Shell's ex girlfriend is believed to have called authorities to say he had liquid explosives on the plane.

I bet this was all precautionary. I don't think they knew at the time that the ex was pulling a fast one.

Turns out that the gentleman who was subject to the hoax call has some outstanding minor drug charges warrants. When his name became public, the officers recognized the name and met him at the plane with handcuffs before escorting him to the Collin County lockup.

Hmmm. Possibility that the call-in wasn't a hoax? Maybe the -ex thought he really would have some substance on him.

Slim to none is too optimistic of an assessment.

Now it sounds like it was the ex's new boyfriend who called it in, although it sounds like they were both in on it.

Possible charges range from filing a false report, all the way up to making terrorist threats. Precedence has it that if they plead guilty, they'll get a felony charge and ~6 months prison time.

Only a phone call and the airborne flight was brought back to Philadelphia after it had already flown a third of the way across Pennsylvania to realized it was a pretty nasty trick…..??? that’s unbelievable but true.
It seems to me that FBI, police and the airlines just don’t trust airport controls and authorities because were unable to detect somebody carrying a dangerous substance. So, they had to decide to turn the aircraft around …..
Maybe someday somebody calls to say: there´s a pax in a flight “0000” bound to “somewhere” carrying a nuke and all planes will be turned around…….

Who was that said one person cannot make a difference? One person made one phone call and disrupted hundreds of people's lives. Maybe thousands if you include ATC, FBI, police, family members, friends, media, even here, on and on and on... Me thinks someone will pay dearly. Beam me up. Speaking of that this is Star Trek's 46 th anniversary!

This what I have pieced together from reading the net, plus watching BBC, CNN, CBS, news. The current B.F. called from a pay phone (so they knew it was wrong and would likely be tracked, I bet he wore gloves and a disguise), the girlfriend was in the know about what he did. This was supposed to basically get the ex B.F."rubber gloved" during security, but he was already in the plane enroute when this happened.

The guy who was the victim of this crime, apparently put some compromising pictures of his ex G.F. on his Facebook page or some other social site. He was wrong for doing the posting of the pictures, which is why when you play, play at your home, it's illegal for others to tape you in your home, it's not illegal for them to tape you in their home. Anyway, nothing he did, warranted this kind of act, the guy responsible will learn a very, very valuable lesson, you waste too much time thinking this shit up, rather than forgiving and moving on.

I believe if they have been arrested, and will be charged with a number of federal crimes, not worth sacrificing your freedom to get back at someone who did you wrong in some less offensive way. They should both face the most time in prison as possible, as well as have to pay for the cost of the turn-around plus associated costs.

I have never understood why, when people break up, they check the others Facebook page constantly and get mad at the things contained in their profile. If you break up, it's over. Be cool about it and live your lives independently.

very lame to do this, do people not learn anything?! but then saying that, here in China the last 2 weeks we have multi hoax's to the airlines mainly bombs on board, people don't understand what will happen. here it's a min of 5 years prison and a fine.

The girlfriend sounds like she just goes from one man to another and apparently convinced her new boyfriend to do something very foolish. I hope these two pay the price. An aircraft diversion is a costly event.

How can his warrants only pop up when someone calls and not when he bought the ticket ?

Only minor drug charges, that won't put him on a terrorist watch list.

They say, "Hell hath no fury .... "

We have this happen sometime to aircrew. An ex who feels somewhat wronged (whether they actually are is irrelevant and no one's business but their own) .... but they call Customs to say the aircrew is a drug mule, then they call the airline say the aircrew is an alcoholic and drinks and flies, then they email all his/her working crew and say he is a dangerous pilot, etc etc etc.

It seems it never occurs to the ex, that there are consequences for their actions!

(Nor hell a fury, like a woman scorn'd)
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

His warrants did not pop up. A police officer recognized the name from new reports - checked with the outstanding warrants database - and discovered it was the same person as some outstanding minor warrants.

These warrants are for non-felony charges. A bit more serious than unpaid traffic tickets, but not much. Though if he had gone to court when he was supposed to go, rather than being halfway across the US in another city and ignored the court dates, there would have been no warrants.

I understand the authorities ain't taking any chance regardless of it being a hoax but was it really necessary to turn the aircraft around to the airport the flight originated from...? Surely there was an airport closer by where the flight could've diverted...

They will usually go to the most "practical" airport, after considering all the options. I don't know exactly where they were when they turned around, but the "media" says 1/3 of the way across the state." Since PA is approximate 350 miles form east to west, that would be only a bit more than 100 miles at most. I would think the departure airport may well be the best option.

Returning to a major US Airways hub, especially the origin airport, makes the inconvenience much less for passengers.

Going into a smaller, closer airport would have meant extra delays and problems getting the passengers on to their planned destination. A new aircraft will probably have to be taken out of regular service and flown to the airport to collect the pax. The bags probably won't be transferred.

US flies six direct non-stop flights PHL-DFW - this was the first flight of the day. I'm sure all the pax were rebooked on the other flights quickly.

The person who was the 'suspect' was on the fourth flight of the day after being questioned by police, searched, etc.

Now, having said that - much like the JAL bomb hoax recently - the decision where to divert and how much urgency to put into the landing is made after security experts and airline ops evaluate the 'level' of the threat.

If there were indicators that this was a real threat - they would have put the plane on the ground quickly. But remember, it takes about 50-60nm to descend from cruise to landing. Heading into a better facility airport is always a better choice than a steep circle into the 'closest' airport.

Also, an emergency type descent would tip off a suicide bomber to activate his explosives - so a slow 180 turn and gentle descent to return to origin is less likely to cause that person to do something stupid.
