Nord Wind (Russia) Seeks US Services

Wed Sep 12, 2012 3:25 pm

Nord Wind NWS has applied with the DOT for a foreign air carrier permit to engage in air service between the Russian Federation and the United States.

Nord Wind states it initially intends to operate charter services to the US utilizing its fleet of 300-seat Boeing 767-300 equipment commencing "in the near future".

Cool. I have seen their 757s and 767s at the DL ATL TechOps before. Very sharp livery. Likely the only time we will ever see them in ATL...just for MTC work.
Landing on every Continent almost on an annual basis!

I'm surprised we haven't seen more flights from Russia's far east to ANC. I know Yakutia does it from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on a seasonal basis, maybe Nordstar can tap into this market? Do they do scheduled ops or are they charter-only?

Interesting news. Could the flight could originate from a Russian city other than Moscow? From looking at their current route map ( http://www.nordwindairlines.ru/?page=routemap&lang_id=1 ), is there any remote chance of a route such as LED-JFK or SVX-JFK?

Slightly off-topic but I cannot believe the number of cities they fly to BKK from!!  Wow!

Interesting news about US services, Wiki (not the most reliable as we all know) shows them having 5 more 767's on order, which would double their fleet to 10. Anyone know if this is true?

Vladivostok Air flew to ANC before Yakutia. I think this passed summer was the first summer season service for Yakutia. Maybe Nord Wind will do a charter series between SEA and Moscow.

It would be nice to see some secondary cities in Russia to the US. However considering that UA just suspended IAD/DME, one has to wonder how much demand or how low the yields are, if a major US carrier can't make money to Moscow from a major hub... that being said I'd like to see perhaps some Russian Far East service to the West Coast like SEA,SFO, etc. They could offer an alternative connection to some of the Northern interior Chinese cities, all quite large and quite important export and business centers. Lets hope...

Yes you never know Nord Wind could focus on a secondary Russian city to the US. Their business model does that quite a bit already. Unfortunately their application does not give us any clues.

Regarding the comparison of with United, these two airlines are polar opposites in business models.
UA is a high cost global network carrier that needs a certain revenue mix to make a route work.
Nord Wind is a high density economy airline that takes Russians on vacation to places Like Phuket, Goa, Bali. So what works for one is a wholly different template than the other.

Nordwind does not have new B767-300ERs on order as such, but they have added more aircraft constantly recently and I would assume they will continue to lease more second hand aircraft. Besides the five 763s, it currently has 7 752s and 5 321s.

Bangkok and Thailand in general are very popular with Russians as Thailand and Russia allow visa free travel in both directions and obviously many of the points served by Nordwind, S7, Transaero, UTair etc. in Siberia or east of Moscow can be served with B757s as well which makes Nordwind and UTair more suitable tour operator partners in smaller markets rather than S7 and Transaero.
