Air India 787 Routes Announced Yet?

Fri Sep 14, 2012 11:31 am

AI had the first Dreamliner delivered to them some days ago. Have the routes it will fly on been revealed yet? I am headed that way soon, so could possibly squeeze in a Dreamliner flight depending on what routes they fly. Thanks for any information!

I need to fly DEL-HYD-DEL at the end of October (probably Oct 28). I typically fly Indigo or Jet Airways, but now that this beauty is flying around: will there be a chance of catching an AI B787 flight on this route on/around these days?

No

However, AI's 77W will be operating flights AI126/127... It's always a treat to get a widebody.

It probably would only cost 30-40 Euro more to fly DEL-HYD via BLR, if you want to experience the aircraft.

I've heard they will be put on DEL-ATQ-DEL and even DEL-CCU-DEL as well for crew training.
Keep flying, because the sky is no limit!

CCU will be happening with VT-AND, but ATQ has been cancelled I believe.

These are all cities which are being considered for AI 787 service.
There are some more as well: DAR, MNL, BOS, BHX, MAN, LOS, TLV, AMM, CAI, SVO/DME, and ACC are also being considered by AI for 787 service.

I believe those 2 routes are being pushed by some Ministry of External Affairs initiative...

I believe first non-training permanent route is a MEL/SYD triangle... No start date announced.

There was speculation that AI would operate DEL - MEL - AKL. This might be a good route for the Dreamliner.

So is AI thinking the US market is not good for the 787? Seems the 787 could make DEL-LAX/ORD/JFK a more profitable non-stop than the 744 or 777 on a year round basis. Those in the know, your insight is appreciated.

The 787 was ordered by Air India to replace the A310 aircraft used on midhaul missions.

The routes to USA/Canada all lose money because yields aren't high enough to sustain the ULH flight. Midhaul expansion is much more profitable.

Not to mention, service to the likes of Almaty and Dushanbe is far more useful than a flight to Los Angeles - there are tons of options on the latter, so AI's service is not necessary.

The only 2 north american destinations being considered are BOS and YVR, and that's probably because they are the shortest unserved markets...

Wouldnt Baghdad and Tehran or Mashhad and Najaf make more sense, even Damascus in better times, all three countries host major Shia holy sites, strange logic.
