BREAKING: Double Plane Bomb Threat @ JFK

Mon Sep 17, 2012 8:42 pm

Just hearing on the news radio WCBS880... two planes (AA and Finnair) have made emergency landings at JFK after called in bomb threats ... one supposedly say bomber was in wheelweel of jet

From ABC7NY:
It's AA24 and a B767 (SFO-JFK) with air marhsalls onboard
Finnair was bound for JFK from HEL
"A Port Authority official tells ABC News that the caller claimed that a terrorist secreted in a wheel well of each plane."
Departing flights were delayed up to 30 minutes

From NYCAviation on Twitter:
FBI investigating two aircraft at JFK, closing runway 13L. FinAir and American aircraft. H/T @SouthpawCapture

My recollection is that if a pilot loses communication, and is "escorted" that he signals to the interceptor by rocking his wings gently.

Perhaps in this situation, you drop the undercarriage, then rock the wings less gently.

Unless the guy below has planned for this, (somewhat unlikely) then you just shake him out.

I love NYCAviation's twitter comment, so badass! @ http://twitter.com/NYCAviation/status/247804061355741184

Since the planes had just arrived, in the unlikely event there WERE ever terrorists in the wheel wells, they likely fell out before landing.

How long would it take for a guy to freeze to death? I bet it wouldn't take long. I can just imagine a frozen terrorist falling through somebody's roof after he was shaken loose.

Ooooh so stern & serious!

Listen to the exchange at the link below:

Quote:
A pilot on one of the planes targeted in a phone threat has a tense exchange with air traffic control while he tries to understand the police activity on the tarmac
http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local...nes-Kennedy-Airport-170080336.html

Quote:
"Can you contact your company? Do they have any information for you?" the air traffic controller asks the pilot in the audio recordings.

"Negative, they're not answering. What do you have?" the pilot asks.

"I don't have a thing at this moment, except that you and the aircraft beside you need to wait in that area," the controller says.

The pilot snaps in response, "OK, we're surrounded by emergency vehicles. There's a reason for this. Somebody's got to give us the reason, or we're going to evacuate the aircraft. You got 60 seconds."

Finally, the controller tells the pilot, "We have the information. Can you possibly call?"

The pilot responds, "Negative. I would demand the information right now over a frequency."

I just happened to be listening to that exchange with the AA pilot and the JFK tower. He sure changed his tone once he found out what the reason behind it was!

Wow... I can't blame the pilot for being anxious about what was going on. He may have been drawing the lines between the dots, and I can't blame him for thinking about evacuating the aircraft. I can't believe ATC was not more forthcoming with the information. I know it was an unusual situation, and hopefully they learned what not to do if it happens again in the future. The company probably didn't know anything at that point, just like the pilots. Good on the captain for demanding answers.

I just posted watching on flightradar24 VS40 BOS-LHR appear to have an emergency landing in Gandar. I wonder if it's related to this craziness.

The 1.5 hours late arrival into LHR would point to a Medical Diversion. Also, VIR40 is ORD-LHR, not Abos-LHR, like FlightRadar24 in showing.

That is pretty sad the AA crew didn't receive information until they landed. It most certainly could of been handled better. I know the guys up in the tower are slammed though but this is no excuse. Hopefully this is an isolated event and will be a good training exercise on how to expedite crucial information to crews.
