Not much more available on the BBC...:

Seems we're not likely to get much more detail very soon give the circumstances...

Would be interesting to know what type of plane and what airline it was...

From one of the source stories linked below the BBC article

Quote:
In Thursday's incident, the helicopters rotor clipped the tail of a Syrian Arab Airlines jet, the state TV said. The passenger plane “landed safely at the airport and none of the 200 passengers were harmed,” the report said

Which Syrian Airlines aircraft carries 200 passengers? Their two SPs still in service?

According to airfleets.net they only have ATR's and A320's. Maybe it was an A320 and they just rounded up to 200?

Either that, or it was a larger plane not belonging to Syrian.

I assume that the 2 B747SP are still sitting in Saudi.

Possible it could be an MEA a320 from neighbouring Lebanon

The major news outlets such as CNN, Jazeera etc.. only mention (and posted pictures of ) the rebels shooting down a helicopter - an Mi-8. I know the media can be biased but none of them mentioned a 'mid-air' collision! Mid air collisions are not your normal occurrences and do not happen too often and frankly, this should have been front- page news as it could have lead into a catastrophe and thankfully it didn't.

Has a real catastrophe been avoided here?

So far all I've been able to find is that ONE PERSON originated the news story about the collision.

I've found no second source and no confirmation of the helicopter actually striking a civilian aircraft.

I'm not saying the story is false, but I'm skeptical at this point. I'll also acknowledge that the Damascus Airport isn't a place where an independent news reporter could easily examine an aircraft, or get officials to speak on the record. Even before the current fighting started.

The Syrian government trying to hide that the helicopter was shot down created this story, they are talking about how heroic the helicopter pilot was by sacrificing himself, and the civilian pilot , by coincidence is called captain Brave, performed great skills to bring the plane back to ground with its back aileron and whatever chattered.
Two things do not add up
1) There is no pictures of the damaged A320
2) They say that the collision happened at 12000 feet, the helicopter crashed about 30 miles from DAM (Douma), how can an A320 with 200 pax gain 12000 feet in 30 miles?

My first reaction was surely, they are not still flying the B727-200. Although, if they do'nt know, then who does.

However, having viewed this Trip Report, it seems that although most were retired by 2005, that at least 1 was still flying.

Is it possible that some of these jets are still flying, after all a B727 would have about the same capacity as an A320.

The bigger question would be the helicopter at that altitude. Some helo's are capable of flying that high, but it certainly is not normal.

Exactly my thought, especially a heavily armed military helo.

MEA haven't flown to Damascus in decades so I doubt it's one of their aircraft.
Royal Jordanian 436, a scheduled A321 from Damascus to Amman has been canceled though according to Flightstats..

Not only does the altitude make the incident questionable, but who hit who? Helicopters don't usually go fast enough to "run into" airliners in flight!

I will be interesting to see what, if anything, really happened.

No, but crossing flight paths are much more likely. After all, who thought a PA-28 could run into a DC-9.

You are correct, and in the example you cited the MD almost got away, it was a very close call. It appears the Piper did indeed hit the tail of the MD, but if the collision had happened a fraction of a second sooner the MD tail would have hit the Piper. Better still, a slightly longer fraction later and the collision would not have occurred.

Similar incident with a helicopter would have been the helicopter blades hitting the MD.

JACDEC now confirms that the aircraft involved was Syrianair's A320 YK-AKF. The photo shows considerable damage to the tail... to the point where I would say, amazing that it made it to the ground safely.

While the top 30-50% of the vertical stabilizer is missing - the remaining part gives plenty of stability to the aircraft. Not the worst damage to a VS or HS that I've seen in an aircraft that landed safely. I wouldn't want to be on it in severe turbulence, but any competent crew should be able to land such an aircraft in normal flight conditions.

Syria has Mi-24 and Mi-2 attach helicopters, both very capable of reaching altitudes higher than 12,000 ft where the collision was supposed to occur - about 18km / 11 miles northeast of DAM - straight out on the runway heading.

Absolutely; it was a great piece of flying by this crew! Another few feet off the tail and it could have been an entirely different outcome.

That's probably exactly why they impacted - the relative speed of the A320 vs the Heli. A320 climbed into the Heli's flightpath, probably either at a right angle or following it.

Yes, that's a possibility. But don't forget the PSA 182, the 727 that came right up behind a C172 and had it impact the leading edge... Both are possible.

Wow - amazing pic! Lucky passengers - although in another, and more real sense, it is a tragedy that Syria's people are trapped in this terrible war. But still, thank god we didn't have another hundred-and-something to add to the toll.

As an aside, surprising how long the "200 passengers" canard has lasted. I've flown on RB A320s and it's a normal configuration, a few rows of premium at the front (2x2 in three or so rows) and 140ish Y seats. The only thing that is unusual is the cabin crew all smoke.

Here's the pic again for you in case you missed it.

Actually, I did read that at full capacity, RB's A320s can indeed seat 200 people.. including
children on laps, 4 in the cockpit (2 as observers) and a full capacity of cabin crew.
I'll try and find the article and post it here.

But what is interesting are the rumors that this wasn't actually a helicopter crash and perhaps a
missile/ rocket strike. Some question what a helicopter was doing at that altitude and the angle of
collision of the rotor blades contacting the aircraft at an impossible angle. Strange
