Nothing on the Monarch twitter feed yet, hope there's no injuries, has anyone got the weather in Birmingham? This hasn't been the first issue on landing with them there either, remember a few years ago there was that flight that bumped down the runway and made it into the press

Rather dramatic?! In my opinion amazingly exaggerated :P

I landed myself in BHX many times in the 737, the runway is not the shortest, but as well not the longest and when the runway is wet, the landing distance increases. So maybe they touched down too late, too fast and were unable to stop in time.

True enough!

Here is an image that gives a better idea of where the aircraft has ended up.

Looks like the airplane is intact. But of course unable to get out there on its own.

Any infos if BHX is closed and the other crossing runway is even shorter.

^BHX is closed to flights in and out.. 9 flights have diverted to East Midlands, Apparently the aircraft went off while taxiing and not during landing.

06/24 was closed a few years ago, it is now Taxiway T on the east side and L on the west side.

Like you say, not the shortest runway but the displaced threshold and slight downslope on 33 make all the difference, especially in the wet. The normal touchdown point leaves an LDA of approximately 2,300m.

I can't see how they could have gone off while 'taxiing', the only reason you would be at the north part of the airfield facing that way is after landing.

At least there are no injuries - except to Monarchs PR department. This is the second incident that they have had with a leased aircraft in the past few months.

That was a quote from a BBC news guy reading his notes so as far as media getting aviation things correctly I wouldnt say that was cast in stone heh.

That seems quite a bit off the runway to have been during taxiing. I assume it would have been a steering failure?

24.5 years old according to airfleets.net. I've worked with Aurela and never really had any issues. Think this is one of those incidents where it could've happened to any airline. Wonder how Monarch will handle it with it being a chartered flight.

Possibly, Might be something to it though. Since Monarch has been using Aurela/Air Explore they have already had 3 incidents since July. 2 of them listed in AV herald the other was a long tech delay for days.

The aircraft appears to be 90 degrees off the runway heading, parallel to the runway entrance/ exit taxiway.

Too fast to make the turn ?

I was at EMA on Sunday and it seems that Monarch are using charter aircraft on the routes they have picked up form the demise of WW.
I understood that they intended to base two of their own aircraft at EMA. Not so it seems.
Any other information on this?

Yes, they've been using a Small Planet B733 and an Air Italy B734 although I believe they ferried in an A320 from BHX for the first flight for the benefit of the press. I understand they have aircraft on order to base at EMA but the demise of WW was too good to ignore and so they stepped in with leased aircraft to cover the interim period until their own metal becomes available.

Quoting gingersnap (Reply 23):

If you believe wikipedia, Aurela only operate two B733, so this might be a case of the operator not being able to fulfil it's obligations if the BHX a/c is out of service for a couple of days. But, of course, it makes better press for ZB if they make it look like they are taking the moral high ground and "suspending" the contract.

Aurela Airlines B737-300 LY-SKA left the taxiway at BHX this afternoon following arrival from NCE. No passengers were injured or hospitalised although emergency services were called as a precaution.

The aircraft has been removed from service pending AAIB Inveatigation.

Monarch Airlines have cancelled the wet lease agreement with Aurela Airlines with immediate effect.

In addition to this aircraft, an Air Explore B737-400 has been flying ZB services from BHX and will continue to do so. Monarch services from EMA are being operates for the time being by an Air Italy B737-400 and a Small Planet B737-300. From 28th October, all Monarch flights will be operating on Monarch Airlines equipment, including those flights at EMA.

To be fair, we don't even know the reason for the overrun yet. You seem to pinning it on the pilots, when any number of things could have occurred. Yes, it may well be that the pilots landed long and fast and simply didn't have enough runway to stop. It also could have been a auto spoiler failure, or a loss of braking effectiveness, or any other number of reasons.

BHX also has a pronounced and distinctive 'hump' on the runway: see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3InAKEPseI , coincidentally just after the TDZ for 33, which could give you a visual illusion of descending too quickly as you flared under certain conditions and were unfamiliar with the airfield - although unlikely in this case as Aurela have been operating from there for most of the summer.
