Who Could Reasonably Defect From Their Alliance

Sat Sep 22, 2012 5:25 pm

There's been plenty of speculation on here about which airline should be in which alliance and what would make up the perfect alliance. We know that several airlines have anti-trust immunity and joint venture agreements. Given the operations and marketing complexities and cost of defecting, which airlines have reasonable flexibility to defect from their alliance? And to which alliance would they go?

US to OneWorld is the most likely "defection" in the near future.

Changing alliances is a very expensive proposition, and therefore it is uncommon.

Exactly. This is the only one I see so far.

CO defected from Sky when they were in merger processes (or maybe before?) with UA

It was before..........once the DL/NW merger was final and NW's "golden share" was no longer viable, they were able to leave Skyteam and move to Star. CO always was a reluctant member of Skyteam, anyway.

With this new deal with Emirates is Qantas likely to hop out of Oneworld? I can't imagine they benefit overly much from the alliance with the exception of American feed at LAX and DFW.

Look at sweatpants guy. This is a 90 million dollar aircraft, not a Tallahassee strip club

There's still JL and the JetStar Japan arrangement and they co-operate with LA a good deal. oneworld still works for QF in several areas. The big loser in this was BA, and that may not be as big a loss as some think.

US and TAM would be my only plausible guess. EK I think will stay on their own, and QF will stay in OW. It is so expensive to join an alliance, you are sort of married to the alliance at that point. It would be nice if KE left for star or OW; KE is way too premium of an airline for ST.

Does not make sense as they are tied with CA which is in *A. There has been speculation though that CX could ditch OW for *A.

Yeah that is true, although would they really want to join Star with SQ a member?
