Chautauqua Operating Ex ExpressJet ERJs?

Wed Sep 26, 2012 4:33 pm

Saw an E-145 in the old Continental Express markings yesterday- I knew there weren't too many ExpessJet E-145's left that hadn't been repainted with the United titles. I was surprised when I heard 'Chautauqua' for the callsign when expecting 'Acey'. When did RW acquire those birds and how many did they get?

The flight was operating as United Express from GRR to ORD:

Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

Did you get the registration?

It may have been one of the ERJs that Chautauqua operated for CO Express before those planes were withdrawn from service at IAH (IIRC, but my memory is a bit fuzzy on when that happened).

That would be my guess. The CHQ IAH experiment was from around 2009-2011 IIRC.

Chautauqua still flies ERJ-145's for the new United. They were a Continental Express carrier for at least four years prior to the merger. The majority of the flights are out of CLE where there is a Chautauqua base. Around 2009 Chautauqua briefly flew CRJ-200's out of IAH for CO. These were ex Independence Air planes. Chautauqua however did lease ExpressJet ERJ-135's for the failed YX hub in MKE.

Yes, we been getting those here in GRR for a long time, but those were/ are PMUA blue scheme or generic blue tail RW schemes. First I've ever seen a 'Continental Express' scheme w/ Chautauqua callsign.

I heard CHQ 4750 on the radio a few days ago and was surprised to see it was a GRR-ORD flight. I've only heard 50-- flight numbers from CHQ at ORD, which are Connection flight numbers. I didn't even know they flew for UA until I heard that.

Chautauqua added a few planes back to UA/CO lately. Internally here they are call CO planes. But they fly mostly out of CLE. Last month there was a lot of ORD this month much less cities they were doing for ua out of ord are or were BTV MHT BWI GRR IND CMH SDF.

Mystery solved. I had no idea Chautauqua currently operated the E145 in the old CoEx scheme (which are NOT ex ExpressJet a/c.)

Are you sure those were former ExpressJet aircraft? RP operated a number of ERJ-135's as DL Connection roughly 8-10 years ago. I flew them a number of times from the now-shuttered DL DFW hub. IIRC that flying was phased out in exchange for E170/175 service after a few years.

Chautauqua has these planes still in the COEX scheme: N275SK, N277SK, N279SK, N285SK, N286SK, N287SK, N291SK.

Chautauqua has flown ERJ's for CO for quite some time. They were down to 7 aircraft flying for CO, but recently increased that number to 12 and extended the contract a couple years. The ERJ-145s flying for UA/CO did NOT come from ExpressJet.

At the time of the merger, RP did not fly for PMUA and hadn't for over a year. All of the planes from that operation have since been repainted, so you won't see any PMUA blue RP ERJ's. If you see an ERJ in PMUA colors, it's Trans States or ExpressJet.

Yes, the ERJ-135s that were flown in MKE were from ExpressJet

They were definitely XE birds, at least some were, because they had the all-numeric tail numbers.

RP also re-activated some 135s as operational spares in the 2009-2010 time frame (and possibly for a longer period than that). They were occasional visitors to STL in the waning days of the AA hub.

Chautauqua briefly operated some 145's around 2009 for PMUA. Those were the generic blue tails that did a lot of flying out of MKE to places like GRR and OMA.

Those were the generic ones flying for

All but one of the MKE 135's were leased from ExpressJet. There was one 135 left over from the Delta Connection days, it still had the old Delta bulkhead. The ExpressJet 135's had big galleys, instead of a forward closet there was aux galley in addition to the normal galley. It had room for about two or three half carts and about 4 or 5 atlas boxes. I never understood why you needed so much galley space on a 37 seat aircraft.

Because when that aircraft was something close to economical, CO still had a reputation for REALLY taking care of their passengers.
